Hello all,

I have a problem with my 2000 1150gs. A couple of days ago it just would not start, all I got was the machine gun sound of the solenoid, and then the fading of the lights on the dash.

I thought first it was the battery so I put in a new fully charged one in and still the same, It wont even start if I jump It off a car, directly on tho the starter motor...

A strange thing that is happening now is the rpm needle wandering around of its own (engine off just ignition on) and also the dim lights on the dash, RID going on and off and the fuel pump sounding wierd, like its being starved of power... until I hit the kill switch then they all go back to normal. All this was happening regardless if I push the start button or not.

I took the starther motor assy. off the bike today for inspection. It looks ok, all the magnets are there where they should be and the brushes have plenty of meat left on them, also the armature is free to rotate, as is the planetary gears...

So I cant confirm if this is the problem, but maybe the solonoid?

Any ideas anyone?

Sounds a bit like starter is not getting the juice, i would check all connections / earths / relays. Has something works loose due to vibration :augie
It could still be the starter motor if the windings are on the way out but i would check all the easy stuff 1st.

Starter

Try the starter off the bike on the battery see if it goes.

I believe that a symptom of 'hall sensor' being faulty is the rev counter doing strange things.

Shouldnt think it would affect the starter motor though.

Thanks for the replies guys,

I tried the starter on the bench with a battery and some leads, the bendix thing poped out but it did'nt rotate at all so I think this may be the problem.

The thing is, the strange electrical problems are still on the bike even with the starter out. (fuel pump straining noise, dash lights going dim, relays chattering)

Thanks to Jaythro, I now suspect that the kill switch is at fault, Ill try to test it tomorrow in the daylight..

Thanks again,

Pat.

Its running!!!

Just got the bike to start today for the first time! :bounce1

After swopping over starter and some relays from a mates bike, with absolutely no fix, I started to take the wiring loom apart and all the connectors under the tank, cleaned them up and when I put it all back together again, the bike fired up with no problem at all!

It is quite strange, but I cannot reproduce the fault now so I dont know exactly where the problem came from. But I am glad its back on the road again...

Connectors - weakest bit in any circuit (if you excuse any wiring done by me). Normally the first place I look at for any electrical problems - the cause of many a gremlin.
