Well, I finally did it! Yes the useless 1150 final drive has been replaced with one for an 850GS (unfortunately new as secondhand models are rarer than Dodo teeth).

Initial impressions are very favourable: I don't now feel as though I am pulling away in second even though I definately selected first.

I was a little sceptical about the claims on the ADVrider site that 6th becomes a useable gear at anything less than motorway speeds but I'm pleasantly surprised.

If anyone is interested I'll post updates as I think of them.

Greetings Tovarich,

I agree.

I'm a little surprised that no one else has commented about the mod. Am I the only person in UK to have swapped the 1150FD for one from an 850??

That's a bit sweeping!!!

The first person that I know off who did this is CrAsH. He has written extensively about the effectiveness of the mod. If the Advrider forums were open (Fish is p*ssing with them at present), I'm sure that you could find his reports (although they first appeared on the Micapeak list).

It was CrAsh that put me on to the idea. What I meant was it seems as though no one in UK is interested.

Its something I want to consider, what is the engine RPM at 60MPH, in 6th gear? What was the cost of the parts and did you do the swap yourself? An enquiring mind...wants to know ;)

Updates

do you have any on the mod you've done then, now that you've had it operational for a few weeks/months? I'd also be interested in swapping the FD for the 850 version - but probably not if it involved new parts. I'm assuiming the cost was 'quite' high?

If you could post details on the board it would be great or else PM me if you can,

Cheers

Can't be certain what the top speed RPM changes to; I think it's about 1,000 more than with the standard FD. The ADVRider site has exhaustive write ups of the RPM in each gear at various speeds for various FD ratios. I'll try to check next time I'm out and post a more useful reply.

Regarding cost: I had to buy a new 850 FD as Motorworks couldn't find a secondhand one for me - they looked for about 2 months. Very few 850 GS's are sold in UK. The new FD was a shade under £500. Fitting was £80 (back street spanner wielder, not main dealer). It is a DIY job but I was very wary about un-doing the floating bearing. In the end my man had to use a blow torch to soften the Loctite. I have a very comprehensive guide that I can email if you wish.

All in all, it was completly worth while. I no longer have to slip the clutch a lot to manage hill starts (even two up with luggage) and hills that I would not have dared stopping on, e.g. Hardnott Pass are no longer out of bounds.

3250 - 3300 rpm at 60mph in 'E'
