Hi.

Getting a loud ticking from the drive shaft/rear wheel on acceleration. Gradually getting worse over time. Used to only happen under heavy accel in low rpm, but seems to happening more nowadays. Anyone come across this?

I think I'll probably change the oil in the finaldrive and see what comes out.

Mick.

You'd better hope it's not what I've just suffered with my '04 GSA!
Input shaft spline failure left me stranded by the side of the road last week.
Look it up in this forum and on the US Advrider forum. Should keep you entertained for a few hours :)
Best of luck.

damn!

Were you getting the load ticking beforehand, or did the splines just suddenly snap off ?

Can you feel/hear anything turning the wheel by hand with the bike on the centrestand?

How many miles and does it happen in every gear?.
Does the noise vary with road or engine speed?.
Put bike on the centrestand and do three things.
Check for any play in paralever bearings or big bearing.
A good look through the drained oil may tell you if the bearing is breaking up.
Rotate wheel and check for noise/binds etc.
Remove rear caliper and check pads as well.
Once the gearbox input shaft splines strip i doubt you will get any drive at all.
Just a lot of noise.
If you remove the starter motor, you can get at/view part of the clutch.
I haven't tried it,but maybe you could try holding the clutch lever in and try to turn the rear wheel, watching the clutch friction plate for movement or turning the friction plate by hand in the starter gap and feel for play or wear.

Varies with Road Speed. Not engine or clutch. Only on hard accel in low rpm, so I can live with it for now.
55000k or so. Been doing it since I had the bike from 39000k, just getting slightly worse over time.

pissing rain at the moment, so I wont check the back.

maybe worth mentioning if you have the Adventure crash bars they are know to snap the bracket under the leading edge of the tank, which can cause a similar sounding noise to what you describe, so check all the mounts closely and give then a bit of a wiggle to check there secure

Oh! Won't be the problem I had then :)
Check Colban's excellent suggestions.
If it's been doing it for 16k miles, will probably continue to do it for another few miles before something gives.
