Finally, the time has come where I have reached the part in the Haynes manual which reads "Replacing the final drive bearings is beyond the scope of this manual". Aye, fine but its not beyond my scope.

So, I need the BMW service manual which is going to tell me the recommended shim spacer dimentions to fix my final drive bearing when I rebuild it.

Does anyone have a paper copy I can borrow (photocopy) or a CD version I can download/copy?:bow

As above.

Original failed at 25,500 miles. I replaced it myself with BMW parts (not expensive) and re-used the shim. Lasted until 60,800 miles, 30% longer than the BMW installed one.

Why change the shim? We are talking about the big output side bearing aren't we?

OK, so you have to ask yourself - why do BMW sell shims in 0.05mm increments? The reason is that the pressure on the crown gear is critical as it contacts the bevel gear. There is no rocket science involved but it has to be right to ensure the contact between the two gears is correct and wear is even.

On page 33.13 of the manual (which I have downloaded thanks to Pekkavee) it shows the calculation - basically confirm the basic dimention of 75.5mm then measure the actual distance and shim according to the difference. A £12 micrometer is more than up to the job.

Also I needed the dimention of the spacer on page 33.12 (2.25mm), I think the origional was worn and should be replaced. I notice from the video that there is some dial gauge measurement done to confirm play, which I will watch out for too.

So, thanks for all your help guys. I'll let you know how I get on.

To take account of differences in the castings and the machining of the various faces. I've read somewhere that the variation in the bearings is insignificant compared with the castings.

If BMW got it right at the time of assembly it should still be right:thumb2

Have you done the job yet?
