Off on a loong trip tomorrow, just realised I need spare bulbs - what sort are they, can I buy them from car accessory shops & how easy are they to replace?

May sound like stupid questions but I've only had the bike a couple of months & not given them any thought as they've always worked.

Thanks in advance.

I just

bought a spare bulb "kit" from my local BMW bike shop. They had to swap the headlight bulb for the correct type for me first though. It`s got a spare everything and is about 100x75x75DP.
£15.00ish I think it was. Handy and I believe it maybe a legal requirement abroad?
Have a good trip. Post some pics on your return?

The std is a H1 type, easy to replace, with no need to remove either headlight assembly.

But one of them is a bit tricky to do if you have big hands, but I can't remember which one though, sorry!

Why not kill two birds with one stone.

Go to Halfords (or wherever) and buy 2 x H1 50% brighter bulbs made by Ring/Philips/Halfords-own etc. You won't regret it. Fit this new bulbs on your bike then keep the old ones as spares.

That is what I did but I purchased a 100w bulb for the main beam. Just watch the prices though as the brand names were cheaper than Halfords own. I know that it is a legal requirement for cars to carry spare bulb kits on the continent but cant say for certain about bikes, most likey it is.

The 50% brighter bulbs from halfords (in the gold box) are very effective.

Both bulbs are identical H1 fitment. However, the technique for fitting both is slightly different. The one one the left as you are fitting (main beam I think) is a bastard. Best technique is to swear and shout abuse at it, but it is possibly to replace the bulb without a) breaking anything or b) removing the beak or screen or dash.

Whats best:

50% brighter bulb in standard wattage that gives a "longer beam" according to the M&p catalogue or

a 100w H1 bulb that just provides a brighter but not longer, beam?

Is there such a thing as a Phillips Bluevision (or similar) 100w bulb.

I'm thinking of going for the 50% brighter blue type bulb as a longer beam is more important than outright brightness?

Thoughts?

100w bulbs

1) Illegal.

2) Aren't you afraid of cooking the supply wires?

I put some PIAA extreme white bulbs in, same electrical load as standard, but what a difference in the beam, althou they are rated the same watts, the output is around 130w, stunning difference, got them from one of the catalogs that came with DiRE magazine - demon tweeks I think.... they were around £35 for 2 bulbs!!!! ouch, but I think they were worth it:rolleyes:

Anyone actually

had a bulb go on the front?
Mine blew a couple of tail light bulbs in quick succession(howdya spell that!?) when I first got the bike but it`s been fine for months now.
:)

My thoughts are to leave the 100 watt bulbs well alone, the risk of overloading both the OE loom and the switch is to great.

I have stock of the 50% brighter bulbs, H1, H4 & H7, but I assume from your first post you needed them in a hurry?

Anway I sell them for £12.50 plus p & p at £2.50 per boxed set of a pair if it helps?

Nipped down to M&P yesterday & bought the only Phillips Blue Vision they had in stock (50% brighter bulb).

Installed it ASAP, works fine, I'll the stock bulb as a spare.

Thanks for the advice all:beerjug:
