Just got a 1200 GSA and am looking to do a few bits too it.

I am definately going for a Hooten crud catcher thingy, and am considering a different seat. The bike has a std seat which from memory (had one before) was none too comfy..

Would also like it slightly lower than std as at 5 10" its slightly tall.

Any suggestions?

Definitely try a low Sargent seat which gives you the option of two height settings.
 
I fitted a standard Sargent seat two weeks ago. It's probably two to three inches lower than the GSA item at a guess and I find it more comfortable, plus I am also 5'11" with a 29" inside leg so it makes it easier to get a foot down.
 
I'm 5ft 8ins and find the standard GS seat height is fine. The GSA is just about ok on low but still a stretch. O also have a standard height Kahedo because its more comfortable but would not want it any lower. If I was 5ft 10 there's no way I'd be looking for a low seat - knees would never cope.

That would depend entirely upon your inside leg measurement since there's no direct correlation between that and overall height. There are, no doubt, several other factors such as the flexibility of your knee joints and probably how much excess tissue you're carrying on your legs.
 
Im not trying to be rude but Im pretty normal proportions and 2" shorter than the OP so he would have to be pretty unusual looking to actually "need" such a low seat.

The feeling of security that a low seat gives is pretty much entirely an illusion. I certainly avoid paddling the bike backwards (I get off and push it with side stand down) but for the few times that's necessary its not much of a compromise.

The downside of poor riding position and scrunched-up legs isnt worth the benefit.

All in my opinion of course. ;)

At an inch taller than you and obviously having perfect proportions, I do need a low seat on my GS and that has absolutely nothing to do with an illusion of security.

However, somewhat anomalously, I did find that when I fitted my low Sargent seat to the ex Si Rich GSA which is now owned by my friend fringe, it was easier to get my feet down than it is with the same seat on my GS. I can only conclude that either the excess weight of the Adventure results in a ride height which is effectively less than the GS, in spite of the former's longer shocks or there are some fairly large production tolerances at the factory.....:nenau
 
I'm with BT on this. At 5'10 and 31" inside leg I find the riding position with the standard seat on low setting much better than the low seat. That's with preload set to solo plus luggage, on regular solo settings the seat would be a tad lower.

Almost as many posts on seats as there are on oil, and almost as many opinions. Best try some alternatives before shelling out £300+ on a seat. FWIW I think the low seat, riding position apart, is not as comfortable as the standard.

Thanks for all the tips guys. Just been out for a 'sprint' on it and TBH as Bendy toy says its 'manageable' but I would feel more comfortable if it were an inch or two lower.

Paul, I'll drop round in the week and pick up that seat mate, I'll call 1st.

I struggled a bit to begin with but got used to the height. I found the far more comfortable leg position was too much to lose just to feel more comfortable in traffic. My solution was a standard height GS seat. On high, that gives me the same height as the GSA seat set on low with the option of a lower position for when I need it.

In the UK I use my right foot down with left on footrest. The road camber is in my favour and much less risk of a dropped drain cover "appearing" in the wrong place.

If the bike leans too far I will lose it, but my previous bike was about the same weight though seat was lower and narrower and that was a struggle when I first had it. If that bike leaned only slightly more than the GS it would be down so I think all this seat height stuff is 90% illusory. When a big bike goes too far over at standstill, its going down. Nobody is strong enough to hold it up. A low seat might give a little bit more stability at the traffic lights, but is it really worth all the other compromises?

Gaffa tape some split coolant hose to the crash bars and maybe some crash bungs elsewhere. If it falls nothing important will get marked, but soon enough they wont be needed.
