In my search for a new bike I am inexplicably drawn to the 1200r

They seem to be about 2k less to buy than a 2011 Gs

I kinda like the look of em
Has anyone ever had one ,or got one .I am interested to know a bit more about them

Tank range , comfort , Wind blast etc

I am not a green lane rider .More Spain, Italy,Germany ,France Scarboro

I also have developed a thing about Honda 1300 CB
Red frame white panels , gold wheels Top fairinfg ABS

A mate is also bugging me bout his 1000 CBF:blast:blast

I had one before buying my Ducati 999S. It was an awesome machine and if i had the chance to keep it i would have.

Plenty fast enough for almost all and realy comfortable, even 2 up. A friend liked mine and brought a 1200S and the R was the better bike. Not as good at speed due to the small screen, but we could all do with a little bit of an air brake to save the licensce.

I traded the head choice in for a heart choice but regret it to quite an extent. If you can find a nice colour one with the ESA go for it, it will do all youd want it to do. Plus its relatively rare. Although aftermarket parts are rare or expensive.

Wind blast and wind noise would be the only reason I'd not buy one, but strangely I'd love a Bonnie (with wire wheels, wind blast and wind noise... :nenau

Yes, I have ridden or owned all three you mention.

They are all excellent bikes actually. All roundish...

R1200R (I have had the first 07 model): Great bike. Feels lighter than the GS12, likely because it is lower/less bulky, though weight is v similar. Tank range the same, road manners same as the GS, if a tad nimbler/better for 100% road trips. It is also way better looking than any GS, arguably best looking BMW currently being made. It also does not seem to suffer from universal GS plagues like final drives, FPC etc. On the downside, wind protection for long trips is far inferior to the GS. My best mate and fellow traveller has bought mine recently and he came along last years 3k mile trip around the Alps with no issues. I am 6'4 and it buggered me (the wind) when I had it. Had I been looking for a Boxer, that would be the bike I d go for again. Especially with a £2k discount. For me they are also cooler than GSs in a "i like being uncool" way. Had enough with Tom&Jerry marketing and the gazilion of London City plonkers riding GSs who behave like Dakar veterans here, so I would never ride another (modern) GS for the image alone.

CB1300: I currently own one as my second bike in the UK (and 4th in my overall garage). I bought it used (55reg) to replace the R12. I liked the looks as much as the R and it was half the price. (they depreciate a lot more than BMWs so beware of that if you buy almost new). I sold my 07 R1200R in 2010 for £7k and bought the 55reg CB with half the miles for £4k.
Lovely bike. A lot faster than the R, heavier too. Feels better made, but isn't. Dynamically the BM is nimbler, feels lighter on its feet and brakes better. Economy/range is similar. CB better poke & torque. Pootling along at 5/10ths they are the same. For the same money I d have the BM, for half the money, CB wins.

CBF1000: I rode it on the way to buying the CB13. THe old model. Loved it. For me by far the best bike of the 3 you are comparing, and if I had only one bike, it may have been the one. It looks a bit odd/ugly and bit like a posh courier's. It has that "workhorse" whiff as many confuse it with the 600, the #1 fleet bike in the UK. In reality it is a cracker. Like the first Fazer 1000 (which I ve also owned), but better. Ace range, suspension, brakes etc. If you can take the gly duckling looks, you should have one. New ones look better, bear in mind depreciation though. Ain't no BMW....(which is bad for reselling, but probably better for running/owning).

Thank you all for your replies

Useful stuff
Theop I appreciate you taking the time to write a detail response :type

the CB 1000 seems to get a good write up

It now has an adjustable screen and a better looking front end ,so I will go and have a proper look

Downside is our Honda dealer went tits up last year and nearest one is nearly as bad as he was

THEOP.............
Out of interest what is number 1 in your stable of 4:thumb:thumb

In the UK I keep a new-ish Honda VFR1200.
2 is the CB13 (daily/city/road parked/never cleaned)
3 is a Vespa 250 (wife's train station steed mainly and dad has a go when here too)

In my greek island home and for summer hols use only I keep a (UK reg, greek insured - better not have an accident) standard GS1150 on an 52reg with 30k miles (which I have bought from this site 2 years ago).

Anyway, I am and remain a BMW/Honda split personality type. I like flirting with the occasional Harley and I also taken a fancy to later Triumphs, like the Tiger 800 (you should try it too, surprisingly good).

Realistically, the first bike to go from the current crop will be the CB1300. I may be tempted by the Tiger 8 soon, or even - whisper it- a GS800 now that prices are softening. The are both great urban bikes, which is what I should really aim for as a #2 bike.

Oh and Slim:

CBF1000s are on 3years 0% finance from Honda I believe... Thats the best bike choice imho. The logical/economic choice is to go for an 08/09 R1200R (pre new engine) for £6k. Keep 3 years, lose £1k. The new CBF at £10k, will lose £5k in the same time. If £4k matters, then used BMW is the way...

R1200R is great bike. If BMW had produced the Classic version (black with a white stripe & wire wheels) I probably would have bought this instead of the GS. The version with the new 1200 DOHC engine, ESA option, and panniers make it a better road bike than than the GS for those with shorter legs

As others have previously said all it realyy needs is decentscreen. Wunderlich do a nice 'classic' screen which is coloured to the BMW even down to having a white stripe.

r1200r

I was in your position 3 years ago wanting a gs (to replace my 1100gs) but tempted by the cheaper r.

I bought the r and have no regrets. Having tested the Gs, the r handles better, is more fun, the front wheel does not wander at slow speeeds and its a lot easier to commute on.

MPG is the same (180-200 per tank) and i have had no reliabilty issues at all.

Very underrated bike and with a givi screen comfy at 80 mph all day.

For most people its the better choice. Having said that if i was primarily touring i would buy a gs or an rt.

As always better shocks make all the difference on these bikes ( in my case wilbers)
