So how many miles do we think the new 1200GSA will do to it's 33 ltr tank ?

330 to 350 in the real world should be about right. I don't subscribe to the 400 plus as written by some mags etc. Can't see me getting more than 45mpg. Who will be the first to set off with a gerry can strapped on the back then? ;)

Kind of academic really, the rider will no doubt need to stop for a piss/brew/scratch an itch long before the tank is emptied. Most petrol stations cater for all the above so fuel range isn't an issue when you are stopping anyway, unless you expect to cross Kazakhstan without refuelling or something equally daring....

Personally with my 'tiny' standard R1200GS fuel tank, I stop every 150 miles or so for a caffeine fix and a jimmy riddle before refuelling and riding the next 150 miles.

Unless you're either riding solo across the Sahara, are riding only with other GSA's, surely, you'll be stopping at fuel stations for the other riders in the group or to rest yer ass & legs well before you've emptied your tank?

When ever I've travelled long didtances through Europe etc, although your speedo says 85mph most of the time, with fuel stops for others, you keep passing the same trucks all day, who travel at around 50mph, so that's all you truly avarage - meaning that your massive GSA tank will keep you going for a massive 7 hours. now that's a damn long run.

If you didn't stop at all and averaged 75mph, you're still looking at over 4.5hrs in the saddle!!

If you're gonna stop every 2 hours to stretch your legs and bits, why not fuel up? Std tanks will easily allow this sort of distance / time.

It's not just how far you can go in one hit that makes a big tank worth while. I use my (30l) Adv to commute to work. It's only 30 miles or so a day so that means if I just use it for work then it's 8 days between fill-ups. I used to have an 1100S which did 110 between fill-ups, or 3-4 days. Just saves a bit of faffing about at petrol stations either to or from work.

I'd like to think that the big tank means I can cross the Gobi Desert in one hit if the desire strikes me, but I don't think that's going to happen this side of a Lottery win...

It also means you're carrying a lot of excess weight on the bike all week David...my 1200 will do 3-4 days (depending on how fast I ride) as well on a full tank on a round trip of 52 miles a day...

This is one of those oft stated issues that I can't quite get my head around.

It may be 30 kilos lighter than an 1150 but even the 1200 is a lard-arse!

What difference really does an extra 10 litres mean, somewhere around 9 kilos? :nenau

Zakerly - can't believe I used to fill up every 1.5 days on my Africa Twin before the Adv - a right pain in the a.

Yer right there. I must confess to not being able to tell much difference between before and after filling the tank, handling-wise. But then that's maybe because I ride like a poof and spend most of my time filtering through traffic and not 'cranked-over' on a 'mission'. :nenau

The only reason I asked the question is I hate to stop for petrol I do 700 miles a week and anything that give me better range I would go for. It's the only reason I'm going to buy the GSA and maybe the fact that it's just so nice to look at.
