1200GS Adv - Interesting thread from Adv Rider

Yeah - whatever 'floats your boat' or maybe we should be saying whatever 'rocks your GS'. I am certainly NOT cancelling my ADV order :D

weird some of the guys on ADV rider mention getting hold of adventure tanks for their bikes, I was told at the launch that the frame was different so not an easy swap! anyone heard different?

Yes.

Several dealers have said they will fit on ok.......it'd be silly for them not to 'cos of the revenue from the wannabees they'd lose :D

I'm one of the guys getting the ADV tank. There are 20, well 18 now, available. So we went through a few hoops to make sure that

1. It fit;
2. What parts were similar
3. What parts were new
2. Is was an easy installation

The dealer had a 12ADV to work with as well as the parts fiche for the 12GS and 12ADV. Long story short, the front frame piece that the tank sits on is the same. The fuel pump (singular) is the same. There is no second fuel pump. :nono The seat alignment is the same. So the only concerns were internals. Except for the flange, it all read the same. We've now confirmed that the flange is the same. Only one of the trim panels near where your knees lays is longer so I ordered it. It mounts in exactly the same position.

An interesting point that came up yesterday is that the metal tab that will hold the 2 front interior brackets DO NOT hang from the same tab that holds the 12GS gas tank panels, but the good news is that those tabs are on the 12GS too. They aren't used but it certainly looks like the ADV and the 12GS were designed at the same time. Given the number of owners who buy a 1150 ADV tank for their 1150s I'm not surprised. Also think production costs. Why go through a totally different frame when BMW, outside of HD are the kings of platform sharing.

The only area of concern, if you can even call it that, is the fuel lines. The fuel pump pod is in the same location on both bikes but the right side pod has been moved to the same location as the left pod which makes me wonder if the fuel lines will be long enough.

I'm expecting delivery in two weeks. I'm hoping to get her in shortly after that and if I can make myself available, take some detailed pictures for posting.

Bet it's going to be expensive :rolleyes:

IMO nope. I was set to get the TT aux tanks, which are still in development. I assumed the BMW stuff would be over-priced so my ceiling was $2000 CAD on this. I haven't added anything else this year to the GS, and my yearly bike mod budget is $2000 so I figured I could splurge a bit. I can just flat foot this GS and the ADV with the longer suspension isn't an option. Besides there is very little difference between the models, outside of the tanks, and with my mileage the trade-in hit for an ADV would be much more than the price I'm paying for this tank. At last count oh about $14,000 CAD. So using wife-logic, I'm considering this on sale and I'm saving myself nearly $14,000 CAD. :rolleyes:

Guys happy to be wrong about the tank but I asked the same questions and was given different answers by a bmw mechanic at the launch weekend.

Is that guy for real? He rode the ADV and discovered it was higher, bulkier and heavier! I could tell that from the pictures!
