Hi to all can some clever tosser help here, have taken off the front engine cover to be refinished. Found the belt had frayed a little> noted that it is not an adjustable set-up like the 1150. Apparently BMW have a special tool for refitting so.. if you have'nt access to one how do you fit it without damage to pulley and new belt. Have some ideas but thought you clever chaps would know best. TIA Dave:D

From experience the belt will take quite a bit of abuse without damage. I've even used a number of screwdrivers to carefully sequentially ease the belt over the pully as I've rotated the whole deal using a big socket on the crankshaft nut. However, if you can find something like strips of aluminium it's less likely to mark the pulley.

if you haven't got the "official tool" you can use a section of thick plastic, i.e. the type 2 litre milk is supplied in or an engine oil container.

Funny you say that Steptoe Just after I posted for the info. I wanted to get the job done. I used the narrow side of a 4ltr milk bottle placed it under the pulley used the wrench to turn it on took a couple of goes, bingo, easy peasy. No damage to the belt. Going to do me tappets now. So I'm off to read your Guidance again. Very big thanks for you taking the time Mr S as i guess you are a busy guy sorting us Amatuers out. :beerjug:

Removing/replacing alternator belt

I did this last week Like above post, I used piece of stiff plastic, eased under the belt, turned back wheel in direction of normal travel(in 6th) with plugs out, belt slid off. Fitting new belt - place on upper wheel, begin on lower, use heel of hand to apply pressure while rotation rear wheel. Belt went on easily. No special tool.
