I was in a BMW dealer today (Bath Road) looking at 1200GS. I was told that the BMW alarm fitted as standard is not Thatcham approved !!! BMW not intending to get it approved either. The sdalesman told me that because of this you would not get the normal 10% reduction in bike insurance. As far as I am concerned (I insure with Carol Nashe) if there is no alarm it also means they will not cover you for theft if an approved alarm is not fitted when it is in your garage or within 500 metres of it.

change to BMW insurance.
I found much lower premiums & no rubish about having to have an alarm

multi bikes

as my insurance does not run out till next August and as I currently pay the princely sum of £371 for a STX1300, VFR, 100GS and 80/7.plus another policy for £95 for a 80G/S and another 80/7 with chair its difficult to change as I sell the VFR , 100GS as be easier to do policy amendment, be able to look at BMW next time round, do they do multiple bike policies???
What does a 1200GS typically cost for a mature no accidents , IAM , advanced plus rider living in a garage cost??

from memory, ( and its not that good) last year it was about £140,
for old person, IAM, 1 incident but protected no claims

Cost for one bike

With insurance from the dealer: £250 a year for a 1150, £30 extra for the 10 months left of the insurance year. Bike datatagged, garaged and minimum non-voluntary excess. No claims for 6 years.

The reason is the 1200 alarm is linked to the ECU and uses that code to immobilise, BMW will not give the Thacham testers the data on the ECU so it can't be tested therefore can't be approved.
This doesn't mean the alarm is less than excellent, it is and is a lot less than the £300+ ones that are approved.
