1200GS Longevity ??????????

Hi, I'm after some advice from those in the know about the 1200 GS engine.

My 04 model has done a bit over 50 K miles, and is getting a bit rattly. I know the Polybelt was due to be done not long ago, and is on my list of jobs, but the camchains rattle a bit when first shut off after a good thrash, and it got me wondering what may be about to give up the ghost.

If I open it up to do the camchain (s?) is it worth replacing valves and springs etc at the same time? It doesn't burn oil or smoke, so I'm assuming the pistons, rings, valve guides etc are ok, and there are no rumbling or knocking noises coming from the bottom end, what known weaknesses should I consider replacing?

Any help much appreciated.

Given the similarity with the 1150/1100 engine, and ignoring the inevitable occasional failure which can happen to anyone along the way, the engine ought to be good for 100k miles if not more. I'm sure there are people out there with much higher milages on their bike than you and there certainly will be on the other side of the pond so it's worth having a look on the avdrider site. I am unaware of any inherent faults with the engine that you ought to worried about at only 50k as long as it's been looked after properly.

I find earplugs sort out all the funy little noises,and big boots sort the rough gearbox a treat.

Just ride the thing,and if it goes bang,there was something wrong with it
