1200gs with no silencer

Cheers st, I've checked out the website and they have a couple of pics of a GSA with this system, what do people think?

i think it looks like something found in the bin behind a remedial school metalwork class.

Ok fella's just got back from my trip overseas had a few hours sleep and woke up at 3:30am. Gotta love Jet Lag.

Anyway, I took my took kit downstars and started "tinkering" with the bike. Got rid of that rear hugger thingy, and removed the luggage brackets (I dont have an luggage) and for your viewing pleasure... popped off the silencer.

First impressions... wow, the whole rear end of the bike looks HEAPS better!! The bike immediately looks lighter! It was real easy, just a 15mm socket to loosen a clamp at the front of the silencer and one torx bolt to undo it from the bike. And it just slipped right off.

Boy that thing is heavy. My girls kitchen scale can weigh things up to 5kg and it was more than that...please don't tell her I used it for bike parts! ;) I'd guess close to 10kgs. It was heaps easier removing the muffler than trying to loose that in the gym!!!

Couldn't wait to start it up and WOW!! It sounds wicked!!! It's REAL loud. not quite as loud as a Harley with open pipes, but more a harley with screaming eagle pipes on. I always thought the GS sounded like a tractor, and I hated it!!!

Just about to grab a helmet and go back downstairs, wanna take it for a ride. Maybe go and wake up the neighbourhood...whatcha reckon? :D

Here's some pics

Deano,

If you woke up at 3.30am - how come you were posting at 2.46am??????

Was it jet lag or time travel?

:D :D :D :D :D

I posted it at 6:46am my time which is GMT +4 which is why you saw it as 2:46am

Well, I've been riding around all day now and its really grown on me. The engine runs smoothly without any hesitation. Traffic hear me now and while i'm filtering through cars they hear me comming and move over to let me pass, its great!

OK, there is one problem with this setup. The centre stand when in the up position, has a stopper that rests on the bottom of the exhaust can. With this removed, the centre stand now goes too far and the flat bit on the bottom hits the swing arm. I not have a few scuf marks, but its all good. I got around this by sticking a little protector on the under side of the swingarm so that the center stand will not scuff the paint anymore. It does the job and is fine, but it would be better to find a solution.

I am thinking about having a little muffler fitted just to mute it a little and give me a slightly bassier sound. I will also incorporate stopper for the sidestand. I should have it by sunday, so I will post pics when it's done.

I think the '06 centre stand (with the straight middle bar) doesn't rely on the silencer bump stop, so this wouldn't be an issue for the later bikes. :clap

You could do quite a nice business in little mufflers and deflection pipes to get the gases away from the rear tyre. ;)

Any chance of posting a sound file somewhere so we can hear what it sounds like now? I would also like to get rid of the end can on my bike and would like to have an idea of what kind of noise volume to expect.

Cheers

Hi Deano,

Well, why dont you let the sound files somewhere on the net, like putfiles.com,and place a link on the forum,so all of as can enjoy that song :)
