Hi Guys,

Those of you who (like me) ride their 12GSA loaded up with paniers and top box on, do you make any adjustment to the suspension rebound and compresion damping? I always increase the spring pre-load to max whe I put them on but was interested to know if I should be adjusting either of the damping settings at the same time.

What do you guys find works best?

Cheers.

I use the spring preload and leave the rest ,you get the feel for it soon enough It seems easier than my old 1150adv which used to be far more sensitive to suspension changes and sometime felt like it was going to fall over.

Can't say I've ever bothered adjusting damping - only adjusted the pre-load to suit. Always found the bike to handle great with a load.

Don't have compression damping, but when fully loaded I adjust the rebound damping by 1/2 a turn.

Wind spring all the way up, and wind Damping all the way up then turn back one turn, gives a much harder ride and eliminates alot of the wollowing. Have been riding that way for 23,000 on 1200GSA

Does wallowing = bouncy?

I find mine a bit bouncy ... will your suggestion for the spring setting make a difference to this?

Cheers

i never found a way to eliminate the wallowing on my standard gsa when loaded. you need good quality damping to achieve that & the OEM shocks have virtually none at all that i could find.

tolerable when one up, but like a nodding donkey loaded, even in a straight line. loaded being 2 up, worse with luggage. a couple of reasonably loaded panniers were okish with a few turns of preload.

I have always adjusted the settings to suit the load. On my current 07 GSA I find that when solo but fully loaded with camping gear etc (I weigh 16 stone) I have the preload about 10 clicks below max and the damping about half a turn out. I reckon that the OEM shocks are pretty good and that the range of adjustability is appropriate for the machine regardless of load, ambient temperature and road / offroad conditions.

I previousld had Ohlins on two 1100GSs - I bought them just because the damping on the rear shock let go and the Ohlins was cheaper than the BMW. I liked Ohlins because they can be rebuilt and they are cheaper than BMW.....I reckon that the performance is comparable with the BMW (though with a wider range of adjustability). I also had White Power on my 100GSPD and reckon the same as per Ohlins.

Thanks for your replies guys - I'll try adjusting the damping too as suggested.

Ride safe.
Derek.
