Hi.

Has anyone on this site come across a small waterproof AM/FM radio which can be run from the bike's power supply. I listen to music through Autocom via Zumo but would love to be able to listen to the radio. I have looked at pocket radios and indeed My phone but somthing which could be mounted and run from the bike power supply would be great.

I've spent ages trying to do this. The biggest problem was sorting out the antenna - most pocket sized radios use the headphones as the antenna, and most car type radios are too bulky to fit in a bike, and hard to control.

I now use the Intaride 803 PMR radio, which has a FM radio built in as well. I've mounted it to the bars and it will be bike powered as soon as the dummy battery arrives from back order...

The controls are easy to use on the handlebars as well, if it was under the seat, it wouldnt be any use.

Reception is still not as good as a car radio, but a lot better than anything else I've tried to date.

Do you have any pics of your Intaride 803 PMR radio mounted on the bars and any other associated set up i.e buttons and antenna etc. I am very interested in going down this line myself.

Thanks

Can you let me know if it works and wher to get the stuff....keen to get a radio sorted

It would be nice if one could get a FM/AM radio with RDS, which only need power, antenna, and have a mini jack out (which would do nicely with Autocom).

And of cause it should be small, but still possible to fiddle with it when one is wearing gloves.

Now if someone could come up with that

I've tried a few different radios recently:

Intaride 803 PMR radio, with built in FM radio. You can mount it on handlebar so easy to control, but reception varies wildy depending on where you are in the UK, and what the local obstructions are. Ie on the M3 motorway the reception is clear and good, but riding though towns or through tree lined roads, it went from poor to rubbish. It was also a bit of an eye sore on the handlebars, so I moved it to under the seat which means that I cant press the buttons any more, so cant use the FM Radio.

Mobile phone with FM RDS radio. (HTC Touch HD). Mounted in RAM Aquabox. easy to use controls but screen almost whites out in bright sunlight. Connected to Autocom via normal 3.5mm stereo jack plug, which also serves as the aerial. Same reception problem as above, even with RDS, if there is insufficient reception to start with it doesnt really work. Tried to boost the aerial using a 3.5mm socket doubler, with the supplied headphones plugged into one socket, and the autocom lead into the other. I had hoped that using the proper headphones which gave good reception sat at my desk would help, but on the bike, in poor reception areas, it didnt make any difference. I also tried using an internal FM antenna lead (about 3 metres of flat copper cable in a T shape which sometimes comes free with hi fi's) but that made no difference either.

A cheap as chips (£2) pocket sized FM Radio from a supermarket started off with very good reception, but it was a bit fiddly to control, and would often just drop stations randomly - again down to the aerial I think.

By far the best FM radio I've every used on a bike was the one built into a 1200RT I test rode once. Easy to use buttons, clear display, excellent reception - proper antenna... But only fits on a RT or LT

I've not tried that ebay one, but I think its going to be all down to the antenna again.

Hope this helps,

Mike

If you have the cash you could go with one of these:

http://www.rocktheboataudio.com/html/35285.html

It's a modular system. Mount the controller on the handlebars and the black box under the seat or in a pannier etc. Gives full iPod controls also

I am planning to mount a Sony Car radio in the left Alu Pannier, connected via my Autocom and an Wired remote on the handlebar.

I used to have the same set-up on my Blackbird, but then with a remote without screen, the new one does have a screen and being for Marine use is waterproof enough.

GSA will be here early May, so will be posting results a bit later :D
