My bumble bee is stuck in second gear... the gear stick moves up and down fine but no selecty any gear. Came home from Chipping Norton in second - nice! Is there any diagnosis that doesn't involve springs in the bloody gearbox: FCKINGING HELL!!!!!!!!!... If not, is swapping the spring do-able - what workshop tools are needed? Can I get around this - don't want to change the bearings, just a FCKING SPRING for god's sake....

Common failure unfortunatly. No alternative - box out, rear plate off, seleter mech out, replace spring.....you wont need to re-shim the box if you are only changing the spring....

Might be worth just checking that the selecter arm on the box is screwed tightly to the seletor shaft befroe you tear into it......

What workshop tools are needed?

Getting the nut that holds the output drive flange to the output shaft off can be difficult without a long locking bar (161 ft/lbs on the nut).

Getting the output flange off the taper on the output shaft can be difficult without a suitable extractor.

You will need to heat the rear cover to get it off as its an interference fit on the bearings (same with the front bearings if you were to take the shafts out).

Everything else is 'normal' :thumb.

Bob.

You can change gear by turning the bike upside down. :D

Only really useful if you're stuck in the wilderness in 5th gear, at least then you can put it in 3rd and ride to somewhere for help.

JB will be along in a moment to tell us how shit the LC gearbox is compared to the relics

There's a small chance that it's "stuck" because the grease on the foot change lever/rod had dried out, preventing the lever to "centre" between changes. That would make the box stick in whichever gear it's in. Good luck!
