Bike runs fine and will start first time absolutely every time when cold, but when its hot, its impossible to start it without almost 3/4 maybe even full throttle. When its cranking over it seems to fire intermittently then more often and then after about 20 seconds it will run normally. I took the inner of 2 spark plugs out and the plug was black in colour but still sparked when held against the block.. Its got a brand new battery on, so I think i've effectively ruled that out. As a bit of background info the bike has been laid up for about 18 months, and when i first got the bike i stuck a full tank of petrol in it, and left it overnight. When i came back in the morning it loooks like its pissed itself with a large and rather nasty pool of petrol underneath it. I cleaned it up and started the bike as normal from cold, and have now not had any recurring petrol leaks but this might just be because I always turn the petrol off when I put it away after use.. Got to say I'm baffled. Anyone got any ideas???? By the way it still runs well enough and took it to Loomies today and if the speedo is to be believed which I dont, then its got up to 110, now if it was terminally sick it wouldnt have got that far I'm assuming....

If its got the original plug caps on ie metal ones check the resistance through the cap. Should be 1 kohm. Fit some NGK ones if they kapputt.
Had an ST version recently with similar issues and it turned out to be the reg/rectifier that was causing the issues you describe. Coils, stator & CDI units are bullet proof on them
