Am sticking things back together and I seem to have less parts than the manuals show...but pretty sure I haven't misplaced anything

But, to check, and for future use for others, this is manual picture

Yours has the later single piece release bearing that combines parts 2,3 and 15. it's a popular mod to go back to the single items as the later unit can bind in the tunnel in the end case causing poor clutch action. It looks like your unit has spun at some point (may be the camera picking things up) is there any sign of scoring in the tunnel?

The fiche here http://www.maxbmwmotorcycles.com/fiche/DiagramsMain.aspx?vid=51691 (good link by way) indicates the new big black block bit (and rod) replaces all the otehr bits (at some cost )

So assume I haven't lost owt :augie

May prove useful for anyone else in same predicament when using manual on something they took apart (ahem) a few months ago...and didn't take any piccies :blast

Bloody ell Rob - that was fast ta:thumb

Clear Pics like that are very valuable to those that have never opened things up before.

See how the plastic piston is scored - it may have been by a PO to ease a stiff clutch. I had a problem with my clutch being stiffish to use & after advice sanded a mill or so off the piston. I have heard 2 versions of why it happens - 1. the piston swells when hot & sticks &/or 2. the piston 'tilts' sideways.

BTW I threw my bike altogether once & was really proud of myself till I found that long rod left out of the gearbox:blast

No - but check Item 15 on the diagram. Its a small oil seal that lives in the Input shaft and seals the clutch pushrod to prevent gearbox oil getting down the shaft to the clutch (and, presumably, stops dirt from the exposed forward end of the input shaft from getting into the gearbox - though its lips are facing the wrong way for that to be wholly effective).

The metal walls of the seal are very thin and are easily damaged if you are not careful when replacing it :blast.

Bob.

Thanks for that Rob - I didn't notice any probs before strip down, but will make sure to monitor once back together - bloody costly going either direction, and buried once done!

It's not clear on the diagram but 15 is the push on bearing race, it's called a bush on the microfiche. it does look like a seal in the drawing though and is drawn disroproritionaly small.

Well, you live and learn. Thanks Rob.

Is there a pushrod oil seal in these earlier boxes ???

Bob.

Yes bob but it shows on the gearbox fiche. It does look like the seal on the picture above but it's just a crap picture.

What a ****ing bast*rd it is to get the bloody assembly back on end of gearbox once in place on engine - especially when you've just thought "hmmm that wasn't too bad...then noticed the big long spring"....twat :blast

Once I finally get it sorted I'll update the other thread.

Saying nowt about trying to find 'classic' mineral oil in my humble market town - am I (in Tull  like manner) 'livingin the past'
