Here's one for the experts.

I've had a SP3 for over 2 years. I run "City Navigator V5". It is registered with Garmin in my name.
A friend of mine has just bought an American version for £399. He reasoned that I had the European mapping and I could get an unlock code for his unit. I have done this OK.
Now, I had to use his units serial number in obtaining the code. BUT he hasn't registered his unit on the Garmin web-site.

NOW!.......his deluxe package came with an unlock for the whole of the USA. Next year, I'm going to the USA on holiday.

Q :- If he registers his unit on the Garmin web-site, can he get an unlock code for MY unit? Or will they detect that unit is already registered in my name?

OR....

Q :- Do I register his unit in my name and then obtain an extra unlock code for my original unit??

Anybody been through this and found the answer or had problems.
I'm worried because their web-site says "it is illegal to share the mapping with other people".

I'll bet "PanEuro" knows the answer.

Register his unit in your name and you won't have any problems - i.e. both units and all software in your name.

If you register the other unit in his name you may come unstuck when trying to retrieve the second unlock code - the Garmin registration process/database is pretty intelligent and will probably pick up on the different name.

The only issue will be if his unit has a warranty problem as it will need to be done in your name.

I had a similar problem with this one when after letting Mike O have a copy of my Americas CD, he registered it in his name... no problem there. However my GPS then needed to go back to Garmin under warranty, they supplied a brand new unit, but refused to give me an unlock code for the American maps as they were not registered to me.

So basically either senario is fine untill you need to have any work done on the unit by Garmin:(

Kind of did this yesterday,

Registered my GPS in my bro in laws name and got a second unlock code for his software so I can use it. Took five minutes. I registered my GPS first with Garmin in his name but in fact don't think it was even necessary to register the GPS. Just using the seriel number for the 2nd unlock probably would have been enough.
