Hi folks,

Am currently thinking of buying a 2003/4 1150 GS Adventure but,
I only have a side entrance to bring the bike down to a garage.

The bmw website says the bikes width is 990mm/38.5 inches.
Not too sure if this includes mirrors etc.

Can someone measure their bike to see what would be the smallest entrance it will fit down. Can the handle bars be reduced by 1" on either side ?
Are the handle bars the widest point on the bike.
I have about 37" between the two solid walls.

What side gate sizes do ye bring your bikes through.

Thx a million,

Karl.

I make it 38" to outside edge of handguards ... mirrors no wider...

:( You may be pushing it... but welcome anyway :thumb

would it be dangerous to cut off 1/2" off either side of the handle bars.

Are the stock handle bars specially made - ie with particular holes, indents, etc
or just a plain bar as with other bars.

thx for the replies so far.

Karl.

edit - I just cut a 37" piece of timber and it fits ok the whole way down.
another question - what clearance has the handlebars off the ground - with a rider on the bike ?

You can replace the bars with those from a R11xxR (can't remember whether it's 1100 or 1150) which reduces the width by a bit.

Hi steve,
it's the R1150R and did a search for the specs and it's width is 940mm 37inches.

do you know someone who has done this change over ?
These handlebars on the 1150gsa would solve everything.

thanks for all the help.

The handbook says that the GSA is 980mm / 38.5" across the mirrors but only 903mm / 35.5" across the handlebars, which I assume is without the handguards.

I have measured my GSA and if I folded the mirrors in it would be under 37" wide :thumb2

Bars allone 36"

I have just measured my bars and they are 36" in width, but the Hand Guards add an inch either side, therefore you could take the guards of or try and find some different ones.

Cheers, Piggers 05 GSA 1150

cheers big time lads.

with 36" I'm laughin, and even with thr r1150r option also.

I'll start looking for a 1150gs shortly and update then.

Steve - thx for the links, I need to scan the whole site over the next few days.

thx again,

K

If the 37" width limit is just created by a gate or a narrow opening, then you can probably wiggle the bars through.

On the other hand, if it's a longer passageway, I wouldn't want to have to guide the bike down it with only an inch or so on either side......:nenau

it's just the gate opening. :thumb2

I cut a piece of timber 37" and it's ok past the gate. 39" to 40+ after the gate.

thx

grease up the walls... take aim, lots of throttle. What could possibly go wrong? :D
