Why do BMW use 3 different fasteners on the front tank panels on the early 1200GS?
I was riding home from work yesterday and a gust of wind caught under the left hand panel. Looking at what remains of the panel it appears that the receiver for the front lover plastic camlock was worn. The gust popped that fastener, then the front upper (plug pushed into a rubber grommet) appears to have popped off, leaving the panel swinging back to tear the mountings for the rear fasteners (two Dzuz type fasteners) unable to pop.
The result! I now have a smashed panel, out of shape rear mountings and some other damage to other panels on the tank.
Surely it would have made sense to just have 4 of the more secure Dzuz type fasteners?
Ride safe,
Shad.
