My local MOT guy has recorded an advisory about my OS rear shock misting slightly. I struggle to see any discharge, just a few specks of road grime under the base of the bellows, but he is insistent that the shock is on it's way. Unfortunately, when I tried to discuss this with him, with the pannier removed for proper access, he takes it as an affront to his integrity, I guess he normally likes to avoid facing the customer, & tells me to either lodge a formal complaint or go elsewhere, then storms off in a huff. OK, the answer is obvious, but this local bike shop is mighty convenient, a mile from home & somewhere I have used for over 30 years without an stupidities or BS. Whilst this shouldn't need to become a significant dilemma, I think we all know that once an advisory marker has been set, future testers seem to follow, unless they can be persuaded visually that a part has been changed out.

Be that as it may, the old bus has Showa air assisted rear shocks which I know many riders change out on the touring bikes. So it occurs to me that someone out there may have a good set of shocks laying around in the garage. Mine are Showa 54565-97C - 12.75'' IIRC on the standard chassis. I see talk of replacing the seal with a Honda Goldwing part, but that seems like a faff I can do without. Most eBay offerings look either a tad tired, damaged or expensive after duty/VAT.

This is far from urgent, but ideas & experiences would be welcome.

I would ignore him and wait to see what happens next year. It's only an advisory and it's only his opinion. Unless, of course, you want to spend some money.....

Does the old gal wallow like a hippo in mud?

The shock holds air OK & damping control is good still (well everything is relative) - Usually ridden 2-up I run it at c40 psi.

I appreciate that the advisory is best ignored for now, but that doesn't stop the BS needling me as I always try hard to present a fault free bike for testing. I'll get over it shortly.....until next year.

Thanks for the input guys.

Just wipe the shocks before you take it in next, simples

I would, but couldn't see anything to wipe away, just a nice clean damper rod.

There were just a few specks of road grime inside the bottom of the rubber bellows - I don't normally clean in there very regularly, but will in future.

Couple of years ago I got an advisory for a “nearly worn out” back tyre. The following year, same bike, same tyre, same MOT station and same operative with a shamefully low increase in mileage the tyre didn’t even get a mention……..it’s all bollocks….
