I've taken my '05 1200GS to NOG to have some work done on it and they have kindly loaned me a '08 1200GS which has allowed me to have a good 'ole poke about the new kid on the block.
Now I know that the motor is from the 1200R and it does feel slightly more sprightly than the old one as a result but what about the rest of the bike? I know that looks will be subjective and a matter of personal taste but my God - what were BMW thinking of when they settled on this dogs dinner :blast
It's as if they've been sat round the table in the board room and gone 'Right, we've shoved in a new motor - what else can we do to it?' and then they've either been stoned, pissed or both when they settled on the design put forward by the bloke with the white stick and labrador.
It looks worse in the flesh than it does in the pictures - titanium coloured wheels and cylinder head covers, gold coloured forks, two tone hand-guards and that nasty aluminium trim on the front of the tank panels :barf
I see they've managed to retain some sense of sanity & good taste with the '08 GSA so I fail to see why they've gone so OTT with the standard GS.
Surely I can't be the only one who thinks they've tried just a little too hard?

I'd like to think the boomerang came about in an attempt to cure the 1200's drinking habit whist fording deep water.

At first I thought it looked odd, but i'm starting to warm to it now i've seen it a few times.

I had a red and black 57 GS and fell for the Namibia 08 model!...........Long Story however.......The 08 is fantastic.......!Only slight problems have been........heated grips don't work!, rusty centrestand which hasn't been painted properly!, Pretty rattly engine which needs looked at!........Oh and yes......nearly forgot!......Just been replaced by a BMW 116i until new antenna arives from the Fatherland! Motorrad Central East left to sort out QA problems at the factory..........Methinks that if the dealers weren't generally excellent (in my opinion)........Up shit creek without a paddle springs to mind! LOL

Well I quite like mine, metal boomerang and all!
(by the way, I'm fairly sure it isn't aluminium )

Here's the pic you wanted of the '08 12GS showing that the Germans do have a sense of humour - at least when they styled this thing - a proper dogs dinner :augie

Hmm - I like the '08 :loopy - but then I also liked the Scarver so maybe I should
:hide

For fairness however I also like the pre '08 and the GSA

Probably a thread that will create a lot of :natter

2008 model gets my vote

My Tuppence:

Traded in my very much loved 05 1200gs:tears for a 08 model about 6 weeks ago, IMHO the new model is an marked improvement over the old one.

Gearbox is slicker:
Definate Power improvement:
Tank easier to fill:
Modified Front cover, Hope it will cure Corrision (time will tell)
Chrome side covers Screwed on so they wont come of on the Motorway.
ASC And Computer with Tyre pressure sensors Excellent.
Dosent look as dirty due to the darker wheels and Cylinder heads.
Room for one more spanner under the seat.

Regards RB:beerjug:

I thought :eek:as well, but in some colours I really like it, in others it looks like the gypo's have been at it with all that chrome. I do think it has too many different metal finishes, but then I don't really like the standard 12 either. Nothing like the 1150Adv for the way it should look IMO.

Anyway, I've come over* all Gok Wang or whatever he's called

*so to speak

Quite happy with mine.

My heated grips also problematic,

Not sure about the boomerang bits but the bike goes well.

Well you have to look under the skin to find all the changes, the 08 GS has had a lot more of them compared to the 08 GSA but I guess that's because the GS has had it's forth birthday while the GSA only it's second.

As for the cosmetic details well initially when I saw it at the NEC last year I walked off in disgust particularly with the stainless boomerangs but they have grown on me and the new design of the side panels are much more secure than the old model and a piece of piss to remove when a bit of fettling is required.

Personally the wheels were not my cup of tea so I switched to a set of satin black ones but I can live with the rest cause it's such a great like otherwise.:thumb

My personal opinion of course :augie

The side bits are verging on the "nacelle" which as anyone who's ever owned a Puch Maxi can tell you is not a good thing.

RT motor has higher compression which isn't a good thing if you're using iffy 3rd world fuel.

Lower 1st gear would be a good thing for me but its not enough for me to get over the "nacelle" issue.

Maybe they did it to prove they're not ghey? Thereby proving they are in denial??

I guess the facelifted GS looks the way it looks to move it away from he R1200RT. Lots of customers were hesitating between the two. Bear in mind that the Granite Grey Metallic GS was a huge succes. And that BMW makes more money with the RT.

When I saw the new GS I quickly snapped up one of the last pre-facelift examples. With a nice 'sale' discount.

Whereas an RT looks (let's say) luxurious, the facelifted R12GS looks more adventurous now. The segments are now well and truly separated.

In my opinion the GS in Namibia orange comes close to a competitors' model :bounce1
