I have a 2009 GSA which has again developed what looks like a gear box leak, the gear box oil is running down the shaft and onto the rear wheel.
I have had the gear box seal replaced twice under warranty but the problem has surfaced again after about 4000 miles, unfortunately the warranty had expired (just my luck).
Has anyone had a similar on going problem? should I give motorrad a suitable rollicking for not fixing it correctly?

Cheers

I had this happen to mine. It was the gearbox output seal

I am imagining that as yours is an 09 bike then the repair must have been covered under an extended warranty? If this is the case think back. Did you make any contribution towards the repair such as paying an excess? If the answer to this is yes then because you made a contribution towards the repair you have a warranty on the replacement part. BMW give you a two year warranty on parts. Provided it is the replacement part that has failed and not something else you should be ok :thumb

If this fails give them a rollicking and ask them for a goodwill contribution for the repair

I fitted a genuine BMW seal to my front engine cover. 1000 miles later it was seeping. A few hundred more and it was dripping oil in the floor. I must have damaged it when fitting.
But the seal I took out had lost 50% of the main seal lip. After such low miles I'm thinking maybe it was a faulty seal. Hopefully my new gearbox output seal was not from the same batch.
The front cover now a seal from a local motor factors.

Check the gearbox breather :thumb2

I had a leaking output seal, and discovered the breather was blocked.

Cleared the breather and no more leak (no new seal). (About 40,000 miles ago)

Any easy way to get to the breather? Looks like it's under the battery on the fiche.

I had a recurrent output shaft seal leak on my 1100.

In my case there was a wear groove on the shaft (I think caused by years of running with the gearbox to shaft boot displaced before I bought the bike - allowed road grit in and wore the shaft at the seal land).

I only discovered it after my first replacement seal failed. I had carefully driven the new seal in to exactly the same depth as the old seal - thus landing the seal lip right onto the wear groove :blast I cured it by driving the second replacement seal in a little shallower so the seal lip sat on unmarked shaft.

I'm not sure if it can be done on a 1200 like I did it on my 1100 - 'the quick way' - ie by pulling the old seal with self tappers and driving the new seal on over the shaft from the outside of the box (just the swingarm and shaft removed).

If this is how they did it, it's bloody hard to check the shaft for wear - I only found out by shoving a digital camera in there and taking a photo. It could be that they've missed wear on the shaft.

Of course if the 1200 box has a stepped seal housing meaning it can only be changed from the inside, ignore everything I say above ;)

Any easy way to get to the breather?
No.
But I found that moving the air box back a bit I could get a screwdriver in and dislodge the "flaps" between blowing into the gearbox filler.
Every service I now blow through to keep the breather clear.

Ah well. I was hoping for a little magic trick. I reckon I'll be popping the air box off to get to it.
Especially as I have the back half already off to get to the gearbox seal.
Cheers anywho ;)
