Going across to colditz ,then down to alps for a play but whats good an interesting in between the both ????? all suggestions welcome I think the run to Colditz is either pretty dull, or will take a lot of extra miles.
Looked at visiting there myself, others may know better but I reckon you would be as well to blast there ASAP on main roads, from there onwards the run south towards Austria (Possibly swing through bits of Poland as well.
I reckon you could come down through Salzburg, across to Innsbruck, over the Timmelsjoch and head towards the Bolzano, from here you could pretty much follow my route from this year in reverse - go over the Stelvio to the St Moritz region - so many great passes around here too.
Then whizz through Andermatt (the magic figure 8) and across to somewhere near the St Bernard passes and then back out homeward.
Depending on time available you could do this trip in a week, or have a few nights at each location and make a great fortnight of it. You could also take a detour to the Dolomites and visit the Vosges and / or Black Forest on the way home.
Too many great roads and not enough time!

All i wanted to know as i havnt seen any ideas from other posts ,was what is interesting between colditz (germany) and the alps ,vast region in between granted thats what the open comments on anything whatsoever were invited for.Thanks rasher for your input most welcome .

Last year I did something similar;
What I did was ride from Colditz into the Czech republic. stopped at first service station and bought a local map, which showed all camping grounds.
Picked a valley to ride down (unfortunately it did have some built up areas). At 5PM just punched into the twatnav find me a campsite. Found a luverly one next to a river, with an excelent bar come resteraunt. Total cost 25 Euro.
Next day out of Czech, ride down thru' German national park to Passau, again camp and eat onsite for 20 Euro, then into Austria.

OK now we know a bit more about what you are planning on doing.
You are going in June 2011, going straight to Colditz, then to the Alps.
On leaving Colditz, where in the Alps do you intend to go? It is a waste of time bods suggesting roads and places of possible interest between Colditz (near Leipzig) to Salzburg, if you really intend to go to Lucerne.
How long have you allowed yourself to get from Colditz to wherever in the Alps it is you intend to go to?
Let's, for the sake of it, imagine you want to go to the Austrian Alps, say Salzburg. That is a roughly 350 miles and would be a logical place to head for, given your starting point at Colditz.
If it's a day, the most interesting roads you will find are the motorways. If it is, say, three days you could do a bunch of things of possible interest, How about: Dresden (very near Colditz), then down to Prague (a nice city, lots of beer) then Linz (take in Mauthausen concentration camp) then Salzburg (Sound of Music country / ride a tram / eat a cream cake). You are now near enough at the Austrian Alps.
Are you looking for ideas where to go in the Alps, too? Only, your question doesn't mention it, if so.

Personally I would leave big cities like Prague for a short break-fly in-look around-drink lots of beer-fly out. Try Ceske Budejovice, home of the real Budwiesser-not the American crap. Or Cesky Crumlov The old town is wonderfull. As Wapping says the most direct route to the Alps is down to Salzburg. Drop in and have a beer with us, we are only 140 kms south from Salzburg.
Remember that the Alps cover a huge area, see the map in Wapping's post. If you try to do it all you will end up like an American tourist "doing" Europe in two weeks.

We're heading in the other direction in June. Kutha Hora - the Church of Bones in TLWR is en route from Colditz through Czec, and plenty of scenery along the route down to the alps. Good 1/2 way house is Tabor to split the run down to teh apls. If you're heading down past Salzburg there's "the eagels nest" for a visit as well.
If you want to make a trip across to Colditz, take a ride up to Arnhem - excellent museum covering Operation Market Garden in Oosterbeek, then on to Harz Mountains - good spot in Bad Grund "Hotel Harmonie" http://biker-hotel-harz.de/ . You can either blitz it on the Autobahn, or have a day run through the Dambusters dams (http://www.stadthotel-bartels.de/ in Werl is a good stop as they have free lockup garages for bikers). Any road through Harz is good - 242 is the main route across the tops. Stop off and have a ride up Kyffhauser on the way.
