At a current mileage of 27,600 as I sit writing this in Bristol, this seems like a 'down the road' problem?

Yes and also often high oil consumption. Fixed on the third gen EA888 but I don't think that was until 2012 or 2013 ?
It took VW three attempts go fix the cam chain tensioner properly.
This does look a nice clean one though.
Only 400 miles covered between 2015 and 2020 and no MOT for most of that time, according to MOT history.

Correct.
Apparently, the original owner had medical issues and was unable to drive.
(Sadly, there are similar experiences amongst ageing bike owners, as we see on the forum...)
