2017 is the year I crack Basecrap

what i have just done is from garmin express
updated maps on device and basecamp at the same time...
what that does is installed the maps onto basecamp so you can play around with routes.
you name the route youve created then next time you plug sat nav in you can export route on to it...
 
one thing im having issues with....once youve plotted a route...and it shows on the left..renamed it so i know...
if i go to plot another route the first one stays on the screen...
is that normal or can i get rid of it without deleting that route...
 
Ok if i want to plan more than one route - a trip to spain for instance then this is what I do - no doubt there will be other ways to skin this cat but it works for me.

First I create a new list in the left hand pane under my collection - on a mac just right click and select create new list and name it spain 2017 in this case.

Next repeat the process and call the new list Spain planning or whatever.

So then I select spain planning and I have a clear map to plan my route, enter waypoints etc. When I am happy I rename the route -day 1 or whatever - and drag and drop it into the Spain 2016 list. I check the route is copied into that list then return to Spain planning list.

There I select the route, right click and select delete but NOT delete from my collection or you will lose it totally. The route should now disappear from planning but still remain in Spain 2017.

Now in Spain planning you still have waypoints etc. but no route so it is easy to plan another route using the same waypoints or new ones - I find this useful if staying in the same town to explore the area as the start and finish points are there already
in Spain planning.

Hope this makes sense and helps. One last trick and apologies if you already know this but if by accident you do delete from my collection or do something else by accident then ctrl-z together will undo your last action - believe it is the same on pc too, saved my bacon on more than one occasion 👍

Stick with it it does get easier 😎

Not sure if this said already,but to continue to add to the route,this is on pc and does not do it on my mac,click insert tool hoover near the end or the route you have already created with magenta line etc showing route, the thick black line becomes a round black circle,it takes a bit of fidding around but it will be there,then click insert again if i remember and you can just continue to build your route as one route and not separate from that point on,maybe thats clear as mud,but it works:D

So despite limited time I can now successfully plot a route and, more importantly, can alter it so it goes where I want it to go (well most of the time). Dave H has actually answered what was my original query above although it was not particularly clear what I was asking:D Still learning but to anyone who hates basecamp follow this thread, watch YouTube and as others have said it does get a lot easier, thank you everyone who posted.

I have one question though.

One of the places I am going to is Ypres in Belgium however if I go on global maps (which I don't as a rule) it spells it that way but on the European detailed map it is spelt ieper. I have found a few other towns that are like that and it just makes it harder to plot as I don't recognise the name, as I would on global map or google, is there anyway to change it or is that just the way it is?
 
Though Ieper is the official name, the city's French name, Ypres, is most commonly used in English. This is quite common in Europe. If you can't locate a city, as you've already done Google it to see if it's got another name that you can search for. It can't be changed with Garmin map searches.

Well this is the first New Years resolution I have ever kept. Four weeks ago I decided I HAD to crack basecamp due to 3 tours this year and I was fed up with using other software and hoping basecamp would be compatible.

I am delighted to announce I have cracked it :D. I don't mean I know every last intricacy of it but I can plan routes and more importantly change them so I get routed where I want to go not where it thinks I may like to go.

The secret is simple, listen to the advice on here, watch some videos on you tube, recommend https://youtu.be/kfZvZXzJI5s

If I can do it anyone can just set it up properly in the first place and get familiar with it :P

Excellent. It's really not the monster or inexorable shite some make it out to be. It'll all be worth it when you get out to ride the routes, later in the year.
 
Having owned a Garmin for less than 2 weeks, I've just been playing with the functionality of Basecamp, and I was completely lost at first - as a bit of a techie, my first impression was that the software felt like it was made in the early 2000's. Really clunky and not intuitive at all. I still feel this way, but by just playing with it and generally mucking about, I seem to be able to do what I want - whether it works on the 340 is another story.

Just keep playing with routes and waypoints and even if going anywhere in the car, use it to see if it works.....

Don't forget to check your routes, and make sure you haven't been sent to a waypoint that is not clearly visible unless you zoom in.

Basecamp will often take you somewhere it thinks you want to go i.e. Hotel, restaurant, scenic view, which are very close to the route.

If you do not visit these waypoints, it will recalculate your route according to your settings.

I'm a complete techno numpty, but really wanted to be able to use Basecamp and thought I'd mastered the very basics. I'd planned several routes in preparation for a 5day trip into Wales and was feeling very chuffed with myself. Sadly not one route worked out as I didn't know about moving the unscheduled waypoints back onto my route.

I'm doing a similar trip at the end of May, and hopefully with lots of great advice from here and the video tutorials I might even get one or two routes to work.

The user chooses the waypoints & shaping points on the route not BaseCamp
Check there're all in the correct place on the road by zooming in to each one & adjust accordingly. Check out the above videos for tips.

One issue I came across was not zooming in enough especially on a motorway or dual carriageway. The way point would end up on the opposite carriageway and I couldn't work out why suddenly the route wanted to double back, but obviously the waypoint was on the opposite side of the road. Until,you suss stuff like this it can be frustrating so zoom right in and I only have 3 or 4 waypoints then alter with insert button I think it is
