I know engine oils has been done to death  - but I'm due to change oil and fancied trying a 20w-50 rather than the (overpriced) Mobil1 15w-50 I've been using for a few years.
Like many others, I,ve not found it easy finding a "decent" modern 20w-50 rather than a very basic "classic" oil  but, while searching I found this stuff:-

http://shop.pilotwarehouse.co.uk/product19110023catno1740023.html

I thought it sounded ideal for the GS - high quality, reasonable price, but because it's not an "auto" oil it carries no grade info - other than 20w-50
Any oil experts on here :bow who would like to offer any advice before I take the plunge  and try it? - It might be a real flying machine with this oil in it  seriously though what do you think?

Rock oil do a semi synthetic 15-50, I got some for about £20. Although at the moment the bike is running on Graville mineral oil.

I really don't know what advantage, if any, there would be to using this.

Exxon = Esso.

It's designed for aero engines which, even if petrol, use different fuel to road vehicles. The engines may also run at different operating and ambient temperatures.

If you're paying £5 a litre, why not just buy a fully-synthetic (street) motor oil?

Wot you on abaht ??? :nenau

Motor factors................Duckhams Q 20w/50.

Cheap as chips and it`s all ya need.

Oh Well! - That Got a Positive Response!!!

Ok, I know Duckham's Q20w-50 is available - but I used to put that in my 1950 Norton ES2 :D - I know the GS is a fairly basic design but a lot of things have advanced over the years and with this advance, oils have tended to get lighter - for easy cold starting, fuel economy etc - but this perhaps is not the best for the GS - as discussed here often a 20w-50 maybe suits best?
When I noticed this Exxon oil ( yes, I know it's Esso - but it's brought in from the States, hence Exxon :thumb ) and read through the description/spec I just thought it sound ideal for a GS  ie:- opposed piston petrol engines, synthetic base oil, wide range of climatic conditions etc :nenau - bound to be good at altitude in the Dolomites as well eh? :D :D :D .
At £20 a gallon (US gallon?) the price wasn't too bad??

Anyway Duckham's here I come :bow

Take a look at this site http://www.ukgser.com/forums/showthread.php?t=64368 It's on our very own GSers website and if you give them details of your bike, (a GS of course!), then here is the reply that you will get........... :thumb

Michael,

Thanks for the mail.

For the BMW you will need a 15w-50, you can use mineral, semi or full synthetic.

As you have a dry clutch you do not need a bike specific oil.

Have a look at Motul and Silkolene.

Guy.

Rock oil do a semi synthetic 20/50 engine oil, it is high spec and more than adequete for BMW twins, I 've been using it in my Harley's and BMW's for a few years. Try your local Ford car dealer, Ford used to sell a good quality 20/50 mineral oil (API SH CF) under the Motorcraft brand, that was about £6 a gallon, I used to use that before I found out about the Rock Oil. I'm not sure but I think the Duckhams Q is only API SF rated, which is fairly low spec compared to more modern oils.

I've just bought some Silkolene Comp 4 20W-50 from here.

And I just ordered the Silkolene Pro 4 15w-50 from Opie Oils (having registered and got the UKGSER discount) based on the Silkolene recommendation and the recommendation of Silkolene elsewhere on this site. Why bother saving £20-£30 a year on consumables for a £10,000 bike :nenau I just filled the tank from fumes for more than that...

Hein Gericke own brand full syntheic is my oil of choice - good value and good spec stuff. I think it's a 15w50 from memory . Mine doesn't use any oil since I switched over from super expensive Catrol full synth. The HG oil is about 1/5th of the price of the Castrol and it was identical API spec .

Got Hold of Rock Oil 20w-50

Ok, cancel my pilot's licence :D :D managed to get Rock Oil "Guardian", semi-synthetic 20w-50 locally from an agent. £25 :nenau - not too bad I thought? - did an oil change yesterday then did 350 miles during the night  (PWaR recce run  ) anyway, engine very quite/smooth - impressed so far compared to Mobil1 15w-50. Like Gecko, my bike uses no oil between changes - and hopefully still won't
Although a few manufacturers still seem to make a good quality 20w-50, the stockists often don't stock it  - no real demand I suppose nowadays:nenau
Anyway, Rock Oil it is - for the moment ;)
