1200 GS, delivered in May 05 has gobbled up 25,000 clics.... no problems so far.... BUT I do have a wish list......

1. BMW figures out how to make a really good slick tranny. I do have some really good smooth jap style shifts but the odd CLUNK makes me nuts... I blip, I don't blip, and other tacktics for smooth shifting but it's not easy to say the least .. espec. between second to first , or third to first or third to second.. it's not all the time but it happens and yes I'm wearing the almost perfect boots for shifting..

2. BMW system cases especially the TOP BOX is a DISIGN MESS. Would love to have a reliable box that may or may top fly into the back of a mate.

3. What's with the engine sound.. 25,000 kms. and for the life of me I can't figure out what's making what noise and why is it making so much mechanical noise ? But then again I've learned to live with the sound... (in the back of my mind of waiting for the boxer to explode !

1 Ride a honda vtr 1000 & you will think the gearbox is built by suzuki on your bmw (was so bad from new i sold the bike)

2 Have bmw side boxes & givi top box

3 engine just letting you know its there :D

A bit off topic but it caught me eye. The 1200GS is really changing people's perceptions of what a BMW should be capable of. A couple of years back (pre-1200) one would expect the title of the topic to be "250,000 kms and trouble free".

A great bike it is indeed, but for my 30,000 kms South America trip I think I'll switch to an Adventure.

250,000 kms without trouble? all the bm's ive had and people i know who have had bm's over the years all have had some sort of trouble with their bm.

Still wouldnt swap it though. :D

250,000 km "trouble free".. what's trouble? is normal wear and tear considered trouble? A friend of mine had 320,000 km on his BMW and if wear and tear is considered "trouble", then he had lots of trouble.. He had to have just about everything rebuilt: driveshaft, transmission and recondition the heads and valves.. well, after all this.. he finally decided to sell it... I wouldn't say his bike was trouble free.. it had major maintenance issues that are the result of high mileage / wear and tear..

If anyone builds a bike that can go 300,000 km and all you have to do is change the oil, and nothing else wears out, please point me in that direction.

Well after 95,000kms and 8 years on a 1100GS I can safely say that apart from consumables (oil, filters, plugs, tyres, batery) nothing has gone wrong.

I was definately exagerating with the 250,000kms figure, but i was doing so just to point out that 25,000kms is not enough reason to party.

I might have been lucky with the 1100 but my 1200, one year old and 12,000kms now, already has had a new rear wheel bearing, battery, and a few unexplained error codes. A better bike to ride the 1200 definetely is, but IMO and experience it is a lower quality product.

Alex,

I don't think perception had changed. It's just that the bike is but 16 months old and none have gone 100k miles yet. There is a woman in the US who has about 65k miles on her 12GS. That is the highest that I've heard of. What you have here is a few of us saying "I have gone this far and as of now". Perhaps you should look at it this way.

Cheers,

There was a story in one of the bike magazines a few months ago about a courier who had done over a million miles - a couple of his Hondas (VFRs I think) had done more than 200,000 miles without problems.

My friends 02 VFR with about 20,000kms. started to give him trouble after his warranty ran out... lots of problems with electrical .. Stator etc... cost him a bundle. He then sold it for a Busa...
