I'm off to the US next month and I can get 2610's for very cheap (about $600) over there but they come with the US basemap. What are my options for putting on a EU basemap?

Is there a possibility that if I buy the 2610 with v6 US that Garmin might allow me a free upgrade to EU v7?

Can I just buy Europe City Select and load it all?

Is it even worth it or should I just pay more and buy a UK version?

Dont confuse the basemap with the soft loadable maps. You can't change the basemap that a unit has, ever.

But, if you think it's still cheaper to buy a US spec 2610 and the European maps, I don't see why having a US basemap in your unit would matter that much. I bet hardly anyone ever uses the basemap, it's not very good :)

I think it's entirely possible to load European City Select onto a GPS unit with a US basemap.

But bear in mind that you might get stung for import tax at customs :(

Mouse, is the basemap part of the firmware ??

If so, surely a firmware update would write a new one ??

Sn1p3r, I doubt that Garmin will fix you up with European maps if you buy in the USA, but if you said you worked abroad and bought it in USA and have now come home, that might be a different matter.

Points:

  • not even Garmin can rewrite the basemap
  • if you buy a US version, you will also need to buy Euro CN or CS
  • if being used outside the basemap zone, you'll also need WorldMap for better viewing at higher zoom-out levels
  • Unless you already have Euro CN or CS mapping, this probably isn't a cheap route to 2610 ownership

Whilst Garmin can both accept uploaded map sets from either CN or CS. Garmin told me that each unit requires specifically one or the other to be able to use the routing functionality.

2610 requires CN and can't provide routing if used with CS. Quest is the other way round.....

.... I think.

Base maps aren't upgraded with firmware updates.
