Just received a 2610 from

http://www.blokesstuff.com/ProductsByManufacturer.aspx?ManufacturerID=13

As it says on the site, these are 'repackaged' units but the one I got has, as far as I can tell, never been used. It came with the transit screen protector in place and even thought it was still at home in Taiwan when I powered it up.

I'm having a hell of a job tracking down a bare-ended power lead, though. Don't seem to be any in the UK (for sale).

How good are these units?

I have been reading the GPS section in an effort to "research" this,
but how good / near to outdated is the 2610 really?
Having never had a GPS before Im afraid I find the terminology baffling and not being up on computers Im worried about all this V7, V8, mapsource, different memory cards bla bla bla.
Is it user friendly? Can u get a speed camera map on it? Can you get european maps on it? Is the screan clear? Do you need to be ace on a pc to work the things? How much extra will the kit be so I can use it on bike and in van?
I would be most grateful if someone could be patient to explain it in English.
If they're any good these reduced units on blokestuff look like a bargain.

Outdated? I reckon they're about to stop selling the 2610 but it'll keep receiving the GPS signals and keep routing you. No bother there. I was well chuffed with the previous version until I saw a 2610 being used. I'll be delighted with the 2610 until I see a 2720...

The higher the mapsource number, the more up to date will be the roads but they don't build new roads that quickly. Besides, Garmin will give you V8 if you buy this unit so I don't think there's a problem there.

The 2610 uses CF (Compact Flash) memory cards which are very cheap. The 256MB one supplied holds all of the UK easily.

It's pretty user friendly but that's subjective.

You can get speed camera maps but I don't think the 2610 will warn you as you approach them. I think the 2720 will for £200 more.

It comes with very good European maps.

The screen is clear.

It comes with PC mapping software which is OK to use, not as good as MS Autoroute but OK. You need a PC to set up the maps, the PC must have a USB socket.

It comes with enough kit to install in a van immediately.

To fit to a bike you need a power lead (see above!) and a bracket. Say about £50-£100.

No mistake, this is a quality item. Many here will have it and few will complain about it.

Just adding something on what Pressurized said...

If you're after something that will get you from A to B, just plain directions, get a TomTom, it's REALLY easy to use, but if you want to spend some time making the routes, planning exactly where you're gonna pass, Garmin is the best, no question about it...

Seeing you're in Cambridge feel free to contact me and you're welcome to see a Mapsource and a Quest 2, then you can judge by yourself how difficult (easy) it's to operate.

you can have my Nav II if you want about as useful as a chocolate teapot to me. Cant see screen, dont talk to me, might as well use the road signs!!! Me bitter? Nah!!!
