Hi guys...

Recently bought a Garmin 2610. Quite new to this GPS experience etc... I'm off in a weeks time to Scotland for a three day trip, gonna take in John O'Groats, Isle Of Skye etc...

I've booked into a place on Isle Of Skye re B&B etc, I have the full postcode and name of the place. I've tried to find the place on my 2610 by typing in the full postcode, but it doesn't/wont find it(??). I was gonna use the B&B were I'm staying as a waypoint, but how then do I get the Garmin to take me there if it wont accept the actual postcode(?). I'm starting to lose faith in GPS and return to a proper old fashion map! Am I doing something wrong...?

Weird - :nenau

With the 2610 you can use part of the postcode eg "SA31 1" to narrow down a search, but you can't search on postcodes alone. If I were you, I would find the place on Mapsource (even if you need to ring the B&B or use a map to get directions) then download it to the 2610. You can do the same on the unit itself, but I just find it easier to use Mapsource.

Don't lose faith with it - I've had mine over 2 years and apart from the bike, its the best bit of kit I've bought & on any serious trip I wouldn't leave home with out it. :thumb2

Why are you losing faith in GPS?

The Garmin 2610 will not do a full postcode search because it does not use the NT mapping and this is the version contains the postcode data. You will have to use the address and it will accept the first four letters of the postcode to help you search.

The manual is downloadable from the Garmin site (if you haven't got one) and this will tell you how to find an address.

The 2610 is a good GPS and very popular.

2610 - address

Thanks guys.

I did narrow down my search for a place on Isle Of Skye, but it still can't find a place called 'Glenarroch' near Kyleakin were the B&B is located. I'm running with the latest 'Version 9' map in my 2610.

Whilst I'm here, whilst riding on the move with 2610, the place names displayed whilst on the move, it's hard to read them when they are virtical, can you adjust the place names to read horizontal on the display on the Garmin 2610??

best wishes... :thumb

Find the place on something like Google maps. Then place an appropriate waypoint in Mapsource. Job done.

As other say, the 2610 does not have a full post code search facility.

It also seems that Garmin's mapping for the Isle of Skye is rubbish.

I like my 2610, it is a fine navigational aid. However, I would never rely on it as my only source of data. I find it is best used in conjunction with other media. Traditional maps are much better for route planning over a wide area. Google Earth is great for locating some places as you can see landmarks. The online mapping services, such as mappy, multimap and google update their databases much more frequently than Garmin, and are better for finding new developments.

In your case, I'd fire up google earth which will locate the postcode and give you a co-ordinate that you can put into Mapsource or the 2610.

Google gives this website for the B&B http://guide.visitscotland.com/vs/g...r,GBP,season,at1,selectedEntry,home/home.html
Instructions to get there seem fairly simple: go over bridge from Kyle of Lochalsh and turn left. If you keep going you'll end up very wet, so it can't be far from the bridge.
