2610 -seriously f**ked

Last year I installed the 4.8 upgrade on my 2610.
Prior to that I had had faultless service running 4.6 since purchase.
Since the upgrade installation (which went without a hitch) the 2610 has
been operating erratically. For no discernable reason the screen freezes and the vehicle icon simply drives off the edge of the map Occasionally this will be preceded by the info legend boxes on the right hand side starting to 'wobble', sometimes accompanied by a border colour change from blue to red (never seen with 4.6) followed by the unit freezing with loss of map and position. Touching the screen will give momentary relief but it returns immediately to SNAFU mode. It will then be totally unresponsive, even to button pushing.
This can last up to 30 minutes, rather unfortunate when navigating in
unfamiliar country. This happens several times on a single trip now, both on my GS and in the car. My previously trusted 2610 has become a
randomly unreliable tool. Any ideas?

Garmin (last November)suggested retro-fitting 4.6 from www.gpsinformation.org/perry, which i did. Twice. No change, unit still fooked. They then suggested I return it for 'repair' at a cost of 118 quid! At which I hesitated (too long apparently). I now hear that they no longer offer repairs to the 2610.

Any ideas? I'm off to Holland at Easter, maps ready, but I'd reeeeeaaally like my trusty 2610 back before I go.

I had very similar experience with mine whilst riding in Spain. Screen would go all wobbly, then my current position would slowly drift off to somehwre in Croatia.

I did find that my power connection was a bit corroded, cleaned that up and it improved, i..e much longer before it happened again, then I noticed that my CF card was not seated all the way in ...

I've tried two different CF cards and two different power leads, still the same problem

You may find that it's the touch screen locking.

Fine dust or dirt around the edge of the screen fools it into thinking that there is pressure on the screen.

My Nav II has done it on occasions.

Solution is either a very, very fine brush around the edges or a gentle stream of water and a clean tissue.

An air-line is probably a good bet too.

I had similar problems and was told that they no longer repaired the 2610. I was a bit angry to say the least so they offered me a new Zumo for the cost of a repair! I now have a new Zumo 550 with cradle, cables, new maps etc all for £128. I had to send the old 2610 to them and got the Zumo by return post. Excellent customer service from Garmin.

Well, I've "spent" two 2610's in 5 years. #1 had a broken USB port after 2 years usage and #2 decided to delaminate its touch-screen two weeks ago after 2 years. Both units have functioned flawless software-wise. Decided to move on from the 2xxx series and tried in vain to find a used or refurbed 2820 with CN Euro. Thought I could reuse the 2xxx Touratech mount and Gilsson amplified antenna. No dice.

I finally caved in and bought a new Zumo 550. It's still not my favourite GPS due to its small screen, non-configurable autozoom and less user options than the 2xxx series. But for my newly designed specs for a bluetooth-capable satnav with better sat-aquisition times and better reception it does the job very well for the tarmac-rides.

For gravel-adventures I'd rather have a 276c/278. The new 620/640 series are getting serious flak on advrider.com due to less capable track-handling features etc.

Well, it's back with Garmin. I rang them last Friday and they accepted it for repair for the princely sum of £48.93

I was quoted £118 when I first inquired last November

I'll let you know what I get back when Postie calls...

For that price I'd be more than happy to get my original 2610 back, even with MS 8.0. There was no mention of 'alternative' replacement. I await with anticipation.

In the meantime, my good friend Matron has leant me her 2610 for the trip to Holland this weekend

2610 repair

My 2610 developed the old delam on the screen problem there a little while back. I e-mailed Garmin about it a few days ago and just got a response now.
They said they could repair it for a charge of $150 US, and gave a phone no. for me to contact them regarding sending it in.

It seems that they do repair them still, but is quite expensive considering other people are getting new/recond. 2720s back without charge for this particular problem....

A courier arrived today with a big box from Garmin Europe. In it was a 2610. Not the one I sent (different serial number) and it's labelled "Newly Overhauled" It looks as new. It has my original CF card installed and they've kindly included a new power/audio cable (which I didn't return cos it's wired into my GS ). For GBP48.93 I'm very happy, the money I've saved on the original quote, I'll now invest in updating my mapsource is v10 still the best available for 2610? (currently running v8.0 that doesn't have the M6 Toll or Hints bypass). All my previous waypoint history is lost (obviously) cos I never saved to PC but that's no great deal. Here's lookng forward to at least another 3 years of trouble free sat-navvin'

City Nav 2009 is the current offering, that equates to v11 as version numbers were phased out when City Nav 2008 was introduced. That replaced v9.

Deleted all base mapping and god knows what else from my Garmin Zumo 550, contacted Garmin UK, unable to resolve over telephone so returned. Had to pay £28.46 now a fixed price (they said ) repair or replacement.
Six days later (today) I received a brand new Zumo 550 with new version maps and all the fittings etc etc.
