2610 switch

Finally got round to wiring my G2610 on the 1200gs, hard wired to battery with in line fuse. Thinking of putting a switch in line as well to save having to take the fuse out when not in use.
What type would you recommend and where to put it (might regret that last bit)

I put mine here. I took a live feed from the battery to the switch then wired up the extra socket and Sat Nav from this switch. The switch is out of site and easy to operate.

Got my toggle switch and cover from maplins and wired direct to battery as you have the switch is wired into Gps power cable not the accessory socket...

This is so that when i'm parked up i can program Gps without it losing power you'll find the power socket times out without the engine running and also loses power sometimes when starting bike . Plus the power socket is free as i use a charger into the tank bag for my mobile / ipod :)

Why the switch?

Mine is wired direct to the battery, but as the "cable" doesn't draw the power, it's the unit that does, so long as you remove the 2610 when you're bike is parked up (which surely you'd do for security anyway) there is no power loss anyway?

Forgive me if i'm missing something, but thats how mine is connected and my Optimate 3 confirms that there is no drain on the battery once the unit is disconnected.

I just don't understand why the need for a switch?:confused:
Unit connected = power and use
Unit disconnected = no power loss

What is different with a switch other than you can turn it off whilst connected? When/why would you do that?

Don't worry - You've fitted yours the same as mine, and how i fit customers bikes.

Never heard of any problems .

keep it simple.

Thanks, i'm no electrical genius, nothing worse than having doubt raised but not enough knowledge to effectively process it!!

You're right, unless something that conducts electricity goes across the power connections on the flying lead :eek: Then you'll find out if your fuse is too high a rating :eek: :eek:

Also, with it powered all the time, electrolytic corrosion will be always happening, turn the power source ie battery off will stop it. Electrolytic corrosion is why boats and aircraft may have sacrifical anodes btw.

Spot on, and it does cause a problem.

My Quest has been wired up to the back of the accessory socket or a second socket for several years, and it has caused the cradle pins to fail twice as the anode corrodes.

Admittedly my bike lives outside permanently, but if at any stage the pins get wet, this is what will eventually happen.

Put a switch in..or cover the cradle , it's the only way of preventing it :)

I use the small plastic plug cover that comes with the 2610 , plus i cover it in silicone grease. It's permanently left outside, no corrosion at all in a year.
