I use a 2610,now what I was wanting to know is this, if I send a route to a friend who has a zumo, would he be able to open the route up on his pc????and be able to put this route onto his unit,(zumo)???

If he has Mapsource then he'll be able to load the route but will have to recalculate it by right clicking the route in the right routes pane. Once he's done that he can upload to his Zumo.

If he doesn't have Mapsource installed then you should be able to save it from your copy of Mapsource as a GPX file, using 'save as', he can then load this onto his SD card and open it as a route directly on his Zumo.

Yes, he has Mapsource, thanks for the reply on this, you see I wasn't sure "IF" the route would load into his unit, after he has got it onto his pc. in mapsource,no doubt he will have to recalculate the route before he sends it into the zumo?

The route will only be the same if you are both using the same version of Mapsource.

And if you also both have the same version of maps.

Older versions of Mapsource can't open routes done in newer versions (well done, Garmin!). And if the routes are done on a newer version of the maps, the older version won't have all the roads.

are,the plot thickens,

He'll have NT (Zumo) and you'll have non NT (2610) mapping. ISTR that the only way you can avoid having to do a recalc is if you have the same vintage and the same version (i.e. NT or non NT). Given the GPS units you have I don't think this is likely, the Zumo can run non NT mapping but I don't know why your mate would have it.

So long as there are no new roads that will influence the route then a recalc (given the same routing settings, under preferences) then you should be OK. If you both have the same vintage (and the same settings) then a recalc should give the same route.

However, once you load the routes onto your GPSRs they may recalc them differently unless you turn recalc off.

Doesn't the Zumo recalculate the route once you have imported it regardless of source? In other words, it actually only takes the waypoint list & constructs the route. If so, this is different from the 2*** series units which can take a route without recalculation.

Over the years, I have gone from ensuring that route preferences & avoids are the same on everyone's unit, to leaving these items as set & using enough waypoints (dragged or dropped using M'source) to ensure we all get the same route regardless of unit/mapping etc.
