My new 2610 in on route from gpsw and it comes with the standard size 512mb cf card which I am led to believe is large enough to hold uk map source but not all europe. I know some of you have bought larger cards and they are cheap enough on ebay ect.

What I want to know is how big is big enough (ooer matron) to hold full europe and uk inc overlap for speed cameras ect. 2gb or will I need 4gb ?

Thanks Bob

what is the full name of the 2gb card that you need and where is the best place to get it :beerjug:

you can get them for £17 from 7dayshop.com :thumb p&p is £4.00

I ordered some other stuff so the p&p wasn't too bad, only problem is they are of stock at the mo, i'm waiting on mine arriving

For something as important as this I would only use a genuine ScanDisc Compact Flash card. As per above 2Gbyte is all you need.

why :nenau Seems like a few people on here have the 7dayshop item and are happy with it, not heard anything bad about them, a few of the reviews on 7dayshop label them as samsung 80x hi-speed cards :)

They are both just as likely to break and i wouldn't be suprised if the scandisc one is made in the same place as the one from 7dayshop, namely china :D

I have had no name cards fail but I have never had a problem with a ScanDisk card. For the price difference I am not willing to take the risk.

Why? All CF cards will be sourced from one or two Chinese suppliers using the same generic memory devices. They are commodity items and the extra price paid for premium brands is a waste of money as they are just as likely to fail as generic items. I'm basing this opinion on anecdotal evidence from 15 years working in the electronics manufacturing business.

The £17 card from 7dayshop referred to above is fine and you can get 2 of these for the price of a Sandisk of the same size.

What I would recommend is taking a backup. Flash memory can be corrupted if there is an interruption in the power supply during a read/write cycle. For my forthcoming trip, using a hire car from Naples, I have the whole of Mapsource v8 on a 2Gb card with southern Italy tucked away on the 256Mb card that came with my 2610 package. I also have a Michelin 1:400,000 map of the area just in case the hire car has one of those funny screens that blocks the GPS signal....

Are your routes stored on the card - and, if so, is there a limit to how many routes you can store? Is there any advantage in having a bigger card for that reason?

Also - what about the different speed Sandisk cards - are they all compatible?

ive had a cheapo 2gb card in my 2610 for four years and been all over europe with no problems.like another member stated only a few factory's make them and they then label them. its a bit like sony/compac/hp you think its made in japan WRONG china.

Fine by me, but I'm not buying it ;). There is a difference between Sandisc and no name other than the price that is.

1. Routes & Waypoints are stored within the 2610's integral memory. Only the mapping data is stored on the CF card. So, if you only have Mapsource v8 a 2Gb cardis all you need. If you want to store other mapping data e.g. USA, Asia or marine maps then a larger card might be useful.

2. Speed: faster cards will be compatible with a 2610. However, there is no point spending the extra money on them as the 2610 cannot take advantage of this as it has a fairly slow processor by current standards. The only time a faster card will save time is when uploading maps from your PC to the card via a USB adapter. If you have a 2Gb card then you won't be doing this very often: once during initial setup then again for an update.

I tried a 2GB Kingston Memory card in my 2610 and Nav II. Neither of them worked properley. Bought a Sandisk, and have never looked back.

I do support the comment re: same hardware, just different sticker, but i do know that the Kingston cards can be unreliable.

Back to the subject of the thread, CN v9 may be bigger than 2Gb. Every release of CN has got bigger - not because more roads are added in a given area - but because more POIs are added.

It is also the case that the area that is mapped increases with each release. In CN9 we are seeing much of Poland and other Eastern bloc areas with detailed mapping for the first time.

For many of us, this isn't an issue as I would simple reload the maps for the area that I am about to visit, but I know that a many people simply want to load everything once and then forget it until the next upgrade comes along.

Try a 4Gb card!

Greg

why not buy a 2gig card and only load europe on it, then load uk on the 256 that comes with the gpsr. that way you should have enough space for a few years of updates. easy peasy
