Had a search and found conflicting accounts of vibration not being to healthy for the 2720 unit. Since I'm going on a big single that's very vibey would I be better off with a different model?
You, or the author of posts you're reading, maybe confusing it with the earlier StreetPilot 2620 which had an IBM Microdrive (Mini Compact Flash Hard Drive) that was easilly destroyed by bike vibration and road shock. The 2720 is solid state and pretty tough, as tough as any other biking GPS. Somewhat rare on eBay and the like. If you intend to use it in Europe and find one with recent mapping then expect to pay around £130-£150 especially if a bike cradle is included. I would say the extra would be worth it compared to one for £100 with older mapping. Alternatively buy one with outdated mapping and buy a lifetime update for £50 from Handtec or Pentagon GPS.
Be warned that you will need the seller to de-register the unit with Garmin, can be done on-line, otherwise you won't be able to register it in your name and obtain mapping updates.
Also beware of buying non European models, these are quite a task to convert to European mapping. Added to which you'll need to buy that mapping as well.
The latest full European mapping will no longer fit onto the 2GB of internal storage on the 2720. This isn't a biggie as you're not, unless you're very lucky, going to do all of Europe in one trip. It does make loading mapping updates a bit more involved though. If you're comfortable with mucking around with PCs then it's no sweat but if you're an IT numpty then maybe buy something else. The default areas of Europe offered by the map updater for Garmins without the capacity for all of Europe are poorly thought out, there is a way of getting exactly what you want onto the GPS but it involves using command line stuff.
I have a 2720 myself, it's my back-up but I'm not selling for love nor money. Great no frills navigator.
