Off soon and want a GPS, would the above be ok? Had a search and found conflicting accounts of vibration not being to healthy for the 2720 unit. Since I'm going on a big single that's very vibey would I be better off with a different model?

Want to spend around £100 so any better bets for the money?

You, or the author of posts you're reading, maybe confusing it with the earlier StreetPilot 2620 which had an IBM Microdrive (Mini Compact Flash Hard Drive) that was easilly destroyed by bike vibration and road shock. The 2720 is solid state and pretty tough, as tough as any other biking GPS. Somewhat rare on eBay and the like. If you intend to use it in Europe and find one with recent mapping then expect to pay around £130-£150 especially if a bike cradle is included. I would say the extra would be worth it compared to one for £100 with older mapping. Alternatively buy one with outdated mapping and buy a lifetime update for £50 from Handtec or Pentagon GPS.

Be warned that you will need the seller to de-register the unit with Garmin, can be done on-line, otherwise you won't be able to register it in your name and obtain mapping updates.

Also beware of buying non European models, these are quite a task to convert to European mapping. Added to which you'll need to buy that mapping as well.

The latest full European mapping will no longer fit onto the 2GB of internal storage on the 2720. This isn't a biggie as you're not, unless you're very lucky, going to do all of Europe in one trip. It does make loading mapping updates a bit more involved though. If you're comfortable with mucking around with PCs then it's no sweat but if you're an IT numpty then maybe buy something else. The default areas of Europe offered by the map updater for Garmins without the capacity for all of Europe are poorly thought out, there is a way of getting exactly what you want onto the GPS but it involves using command line stuff.

I have a 2720 myself, it's my back-up but I'm not selling for love nor money. Great no frills navigator.

Thanks for putting things straight Bumpkin, hoping to buy a 2820 now - Thanks anyway Anthony

2820

I rode to Morocco with my 2720 on board. But when i was in Morocco i switched on my Garmin GPS60CS which has the morocco maps downloaded from here on. The 2720 did still show the main roads in Morocco.

Unless you have a 2820 lined up then don't discount the 2720. As said above they only differences are Bluetooth, MP3 player and file system access.

Bluetooth is OK if you already have a Bluetooth headset but I would be inclined to go for a hard-wired intercom which should be more versatile and be bike powered to boot (i.e. no battery to go flat).

The 2820 still only has 2GB of storage, when they were a current model City Navigator left quite a bit of room for MP3s, now it's over 2GB so you have to sacrifice more regions of the mapping to have any spare room for music.

File system access is the most useful feature IMHO as changing mapping around will be much easier than doing the command line thing. This a little tricky as you have to get the unlock right and change file names before transfer but all that can be done in Windows.

Just my poor grammar, don't have anything currently - was looking at buying a 2720 but saw a 2820 with TT mount at a bargain price hence the interest in that. I wasn't interested in the bluetooth or MP3
I thought with either of the units I could download Olaf maps like you can with a 60 CS(X)? Or is that wrong??

You can use the topo morocco maps ( free downlaod), covers all the roads in morocco and it even has street mapping for the souk in marrakesh, i used the topo morocco on my 2610 to lead a load of tossers on a souk ride through :D

+1 for the 2720.

Fitted to my 2010 Anniversary Edition GSA with a Touratech mount (from this site) and it is perfect for the job.

As for bluetooth on the 2820 - if you don't need it, don't have it. Just another thing to have to worry about. All my systems run through a SuperPro AVI no worries!

Good luck
