Hello to all. Just recd. my 2720/been using a 2610 for a bit over 2 years.
Is there a way to use less than all four info segments on the right hand side and can they be made tranparent? I would like to delete the top two if possible. Seems a bit harder to use at first glance.

Many thanks for you help.

2720 answers...

There was a lengthy thread about these issues a few weeks ago, though I can't seem to find it now.
The upshot was that there is no facility on the 2720 to make the info boxes transparent, it also seems to me that you only have the option of having all the boxes visible on screen or none at all. Some of the options cut the box numbers down to 3 but then the lower box is twice the size! :(

Thanks JohnB.

Seems to me that the screen looks better and it is a bit quicker/all else is a step in the wrong direction. Think I'll send it back on monday and continue on with my 2610.

Jon,

Thank you for showing me the thread. I posted a note there in the hope that PE would notice it.

I've only had my 2820 for a week now, but can't say I've been inconvenienced by the info segments on the right not being transparent. On the 2610, although the screen size looks bigger, do you really use the maps that are just about visble under the numbers on the right hand side?

Regards,

Charles

Charles,

The first half of the question is more important to me. That is the answer I am looking for/would really solve the second half to my satisfaction.

Answer is posted on the other thread (link is above).

FYI, it takes about 2 to 4 weeks or so to get used to the 27xx or 28xx user interface if you are upgrading from a 26xx. Don't be too quick to judge the newer UI - after you have used it for about a month, it will seem just as intuitive as the 26xx did, and, you'll have figured out how to get the display set up pretty much the way you want it (except, of course, no transparent tabs, or dockable tabs, or gaps in the middle).

I was a bit miffed too when I lost the transparent tabs (going to a 27xx from a 26xx), but I really don't miss them much now.

Michael,

Many thanks for confirming. Now that I've used it a bit...it is better in ways that make up for the little change that I found not to my liking. Selling the 2610! :thumb

Don't accept too low a price for the 2610. It is a very capable unit, and personally, I think it will join the ranks of the 'legendary' GPSRs that Garmin has made over the years, such as the GPS III, the SP III, and the 296.

If a person does not need traffic alerts or speed camera alerts, and doesn't mind the slightly coarse (by today's standards) visual image, it is still an absolutely perfect GPSR for moto navigation. You can run version 8 cartography on a 26xx, and if you buy a big enough CF card, you can fit all of Europe (or all of North America, or even both) on it. The SP III may be functionally obsolete due to its limited storage capacity and slow processor, but the 26xx still has lots of life left in it... at least another 3 years, by my guess.

Michael,

The 2610 is a good box. I got a good price for it and the 2 gig card that held all of the US and Canada. I used in in europe for 9.5 weeks with another 2 gig card holding western europe this april/may and june. Just uploaded Norway/UK/and the alps into the spare room in the 2720.

Again thanks for all your help.
