2820 audio clipping when used with active mixer

I have an active audio mixer that combines several audio signals into one and pipes them to my helmet. I originally had a Garmin Streetpilot 2610 and then I upgraded to the 2720 last year and both worked perfectly fine with this setup.

I recently upgraded again to a 2820 (still have the 2720) and when I use the 2820 the audio clips when voice prompts are given. Besides the audio clipping, the audio level is much more reduced than that of the 2720. It's almost a paradox as the audio level is much lower but the mixer is clipping as if the audio level fed in into it is too high.

I was wondering if anyone had heard of this issue before or had any suggestions or ideas.

Thank you.

No, I do not believe it does. Oddly enough, both GPS units are set to the same audio level (70%) and both audio signals are from the rear of the unit (Garmin power/audio cable - not the 3.5mm audio jack on the side of the 2820). Since both are set to the same level, I'm baffled as to why one causes the mixer to clip while the other does not. Were any changes made to rear (audio contacts) on the connector on the 2820? I've searched but found nothing indicating this.

This requires a process of elimination.
1) Have you changed any of the wires into the mixer because your 2820 has mobile phone capability or are you using exactly the same cables as for the 2720? If you have changed, then revert back to the 2720 cables first and try again.
2) Does it clip on music as well as GPS instructions?
3) The is a master control volume and then separate sub-controls for each of the inputs - how have you got all of these volumes set?
4) Try plugging another input into the 2820 port on the mixer and check whether the mixer has gone bad.
5) Plug the 2820 into a different input on the mixer and check there as well.

Good luck - and let's hope it is not the Garmin unit!

1) I am using exactly the same cables for both units (both in the car and the motorcycle) - I just swap GPS units between the two - cables stay with the vehicle.
2) I have yet to listen to music on the 2820... I will try this and see. (come to think of it, I seem to always forget it has this capability) :blast
3) Yes, the volumes levels are all equalised. I believe Master volume is set to 70% on both units (2720 sounds perfect at this level while 2820 audio clips) and all the sub-volumes on the 2820 are set to 80% if I recall correctly.
4) I do not believe the mixer has gone bad as I've swapped back and forth several times between both units and the 2720 is spot on each time.
5) I will bypass the rear power/audio connector and use a 3.5mm audio patch cord and see how it sounds. (I assume the 3.5mm connector on the side is a stereo connection, true?)

The unit is very new, going on two months now. Interestingly enough I was looking at Garmin's website and both the 2820 & 2720 use the same in car cigarette lighter adapter and the same motorcycle power/audio cable thus the cabling most likely is not the problem. Strangely enough, both units are perfect when used in the car although I am not sure if I re-adjust the volume output differently when used in car. Perhaps one unit has a stronger output than the other. I will definitely try to check this.

Is it possible that the "digital" voice (the one that reads street names) is causing your mixer to oscillate? If it plays music fine, try changing to the old style voice...

Al..

3.5mm connector on the side is stereo, but you might get some hum on that outlet (let me know if you do get hum).

Okay, solved the clipping issue. Apparently the 2820 has a completely different power supply for the audio circuit than the 2720 and thus the output levels are completely different as well. As for the side 3.5mm stereo connector, yes, a very slight constant hum, with or without music via the mp3 player.
