I have a Garmin SPIII de luxe and have downloaded the software/firmware for the Navigator 1 from the BMW website in order get the dealers included. Doing it this way means that one does not use up the waypoint allocation of the unit to store these locations as they are apparently kept in a different part of memory.
If I bought a 2820 and downloaded the BMW version of the software to get the dealers, would the MP3 player stop working? - is the software compatible?

If you loaded BMW Nav III system software into a 2820, the MP3 player would continue to work, and you would not suddenly get the 'Compass Pointer' screen that the Nav III offers. Likewise, if you loaded 2820 software into a Nav III, you would not suddenly get a MP3 player.

The two GPSRs know what 'gender' they are (Nav III or 2820), and only load the appropriate portions of the software package.
