Hi,
I have purchased a 2820 for the bluetooth and music capabilities, everything seems to be ok but I am limited to downloading 167mb of music when it should hold around 800mb, the screen shows city navigator europe NT 2009 all and the software version is 4.40. I have not been able to register it with Garmin but it has been owned by a few on this ere parish so I could probably get it deregistered if I needed. The disc in the box is NTv8 and I do have the yellow unlock code sheet. I do hope someone can help me as I am getting fed up listening to the same music every 50 miles. :blast

I don't really use the 2820 for music but you can make more space by removing the some of the unused foreign Text to Speech voices - leave UK Emily and basic commands.
As it happens my Bluetooth is knackered - Garmin tried to repair it but a replacement unit is required.
However, I have grown fond of it and have recently purchased a Numaps lifetime update. I shall purchase the replacement for the 660, whatever and whenever that may be.

Have fun with the 2820.

Thanks for that I will give it a go, I just fancied leaving the ipod at home for once.:thumb

On Garmins with NT mapping there are two files used for your mapping data. These have file names of gmapprom.img and gmapsupp.img. The former is the primary mapping and should contain your primary map data (i.e. City Navigator NT 2009). The latter is for supplementary mapping data such as TOPO or other regions (i.e. parts of US City Nav that you've purchased separately for a trip).

The way that these two files are updated are different with the primary mapping having a level of protection to prevent you overwriting it accidentally. This file can only be officially updated by performing a map update using an update disc, or more recently, the on-line updating service. There is a manual command line method that I wont go into here and also a method that users with a GPS that has mass storage mode can use (the 2820 has this). Suffice to say you don't really want to mess with the primary mapping space unless you really need to.

The supplementary mapping file is updated using the the send to device command in Mapsource (when you have the 'maps' checkbox ticked as you upload). It's possible that a previous owner of your GPS has used this at some time and there's data on there that you aren't aware of. Sometimes users update their mapping by using the Mapsource send to device method and wonder why everything wont fit on so it's possible that you have both NT2009 and the previous mapping on there.

When using send to device in Mapsource the existing gmapsupp.img is overwritten with a new one. This is goes part way to explain why some users get in a muddle when updating, especially if they previously owned a non NT Garmin such as a 2610 or Quest where this was the only way to update your mapping data.

Hook the 2820 up to your PC and select mass storage mode. Then check the size of both of the above files.

ISTR that the 2820 has about 2GB of memory, City Nav 2011 uses about 1.85GB, I'm not so sure about the NT 2009 version but that should be significantly less as it doesn't have data for 3D buildings, turn assist etc. ISTR that City Nav 2008 NT was around 1.4GB so it should be a little more than that.

The gmapsupp.img supplementary mapping file should be near to nothing in size or not even there at all unless you have data loaded. If it's large then it's possible that's where your NT 2009 mapping is so don't rush to delete or modify it.

If the gmapsupp.img is small and the gmapprom.img is taking up most of the memory then you can reduce this by creating a custom gmapprom.img file including only the countries you actually need. If this is the case I can provide instructions for you. However, if you don't have the NT 2009 City Nav disk and unlock code then you'd loose that mapping, you'd need to update your mapping to 2011.

What's that mean Popell?

Hmmm... that might negate you attempting any of the above :nenau :D

Hi bumpkin,
Thanks very much for answering in such detail, I had a look at gmapprom.img and the size is 1.53gb add voice and it goes up to 1.6gb so I dont know why I thought I had 800mb available. I do not have a 2009 disc only the original v8 so I think I will stay with that and go back to my ipod for longer journeys, once again thanks for your time it's been an education. :bow

Do you have a gmapsupp.img file, if so how big is that?

Sounds like everything is where it should be then. Not sure what's using up the lion's share of the rest as you should have just under half a gig free in my estimation.

As suggested you could try deleting all voices other than the one you use.

I thought that maybe custom POIs were accounting for quite a bit but I've just checked my fairly extensive collection and that's only 10MB.

As it stands you wouldn't be able to fit very much in the way of MP3s into what you have left anyway so maybe stick with the iPod.

I was being a little tongue in cheek but basically if you were to store/convert your music to a lower bit rate , each track takes up less space therefore you would fit more tracks on.
The downside of this is the recordings do not sound as good - saying that you will not detect a difference between 128kb and anything above.
Lots of my tracks arerecoded at 320 and I can't honestly tell much difference nad thats with a decent stereo - I would have no chance at speed in a helmet.

I see what you mean now I will give it a go, like you say at speed in a helmet sound quality is not going to be paramount. I did delete the voices I dont use and my download file moved up to 204mb, as you say Bumkin it does seem strange when I have no saved routes or POI that there is not more available memory, the joy of gadgets eh! thanks chaps. :beerjug:

Well City Nav 2011.1 won't fit onto my 2720 which is meant to have 2GB of memory. This mapping is 1.85GB so there must be quite a bit of space used by firmware, voices etc. Guess we'll never know.

With my set-up the update from City Nav 2008 NT to City Nav 2011 presented a dilemma. The new mapping wouldn't fit on in it's entirety and the few pre-defined options given for chunks of the mapping as part of the download/update process didn't suit my purpose. I would be missing countries I wanted and including some that I didn't. In the end I downloaded the complete set to my PC and created my own mapset as below. This was the best compromise. This uses 1.5GB. Oddly enough MapInsatall seems to think that I have 400MB of free space which doesn't really make sense...

If ever I need mapping for the other countries I'll just have to create and upload a new mapset.

Thanks for that Bumpkin!

I had to exactly the same on my 2820 as regards custom map-set. It was very useful to see what you have managed to fit onto the 2720.

My custom mapset technique means that I can select the countries that I want on there as opposed to the somewhat limited and poor selection offered by Garmin.

At least with the 2820 you have the Mass Storage mode that enables you to write a custom mapset to the GPS. The 2720 lacks this, however, I found a way previously when converting my unit from a US model to a European model.

When creating the custom mapset you need to ensure that the mapping is unlocked to your specific GPS on your PC otherwise the effort will be wasted.
