Gentlemen
I have a std BWM top box on my bike and on cold and windy days I while away the hours making it bigger and smaller (ooh matron!!) :D

Very simple design but excellent in practice however, I have one small issue, should these be able to move around on the mounting plate? IF not is it a warranty thing, and will it fall orft?

ANswers in a plain brown envelope please!!!!

PS (I think this is the right place!) :nenau

I think they are subject of a recall.

You go to the dealer and they give you a bungee to keep it in place! ;)

(Seriously, there is quite a lot on the subject of 1200 top-boxes coming adrift, a search should provide all you need to know).

Had great problems off road on the Ridgeway with Clive and Shrek2 with my topbox coming off, even though it was secured with two bungees. I've now placed a couple of thin sponges between the topbox and the plate which takes up the slack.

Top BOX....

mine was moving about abit and I asked whilst in Battersea if there was a modification for this. They changed both box and fixing bracket straight away under warranty with no fuss.

Steve :D

Had mine replaced under warranty. Dealer now has new part number for the topbox. Mine was moving around also you could lift the box up slightly from the base plate. So take it back.

Thanks for your advice chaps. :D
Bikes an ex demo from Woolastons Northampton, Ive had the bike for about 6 weeks!! Just had my oil seals done due to weeping from engine/gearbox joint, my front engine cover replaced due to corrossion and my petrol tank swapped due to it smelling of petrol all the time.
SO might as well go for this as well!!

Mind you, I mentioned somewthing I liked last time I was picking my bike up and the service manager mumbled "YOur happy about something then" so I shoud extend his training form the charm school even further !!!!! :dabone

A little bit of velcro does the trick for a few pence.

Or..... a little bit of help from BMW !!! :P

being sorted under warranty :clap

watch out - a very important fasteny bit (getting technical now) is made of plastic and prone to snapping, esp. in cold weather. I've had two of these things break - result: top box does not arrive at destination with bike.

I now fasten the box on with bungees in addition to the standard fittings to avoid losing my top box & temper

..........for that extra look of "class" consistent with a £10k bike. :mmmm

We shouldn't really have to turn a silk purse into a sow's ear should we?

My top box was replaced free of charge at the 18k service (had the bike since June 2004). It had become progressively looser in the weeks preceeding the service...I mentioned the fact and hey presto - a new box.

:) In fact BMW have now agreed to give me a refund for the two top boxes :)
and the mounting plate :)
and the tyre that didn't work :)
currenty fixing gearbox :)
ignition system :)
neutral indicator :)
gear indicator :)
battery recall :)
checking for corrossion afte tips on this site :thum

I fitted a givi box on the rear, & never looked back :hapybnce:

Given the size of your average Givi topbox, looking backs not an option :hapybnce:
