I've got a drawer full of negs I'd like to put onto CD ROM, anyone know of the best way to go about it / how much it costs etc? Admittedly I've asked this before about slides, I imagine that the process is similar and as expensive but hope to be proved wrong ...

I've tried scanning the prints directly into My Pictures but the results are a bit disappointing re: loss of definition (scanner is a Canon MP370).

I think there are several photo suppliers who will do it for you. Sorry don't know prices.

I bought a Canon CanoScan 4200F which has a section in it's lid specifically for scanning slides and negatives.

Cost me £88.00 plus carriage from Pixmania at Christmas. I am very pleased with the results.

If you are interested I can post a couple.

The process for negatives will be exactly the same as for slides, so no difference in cost (other than they are probably not mounted).

Flatbed scanners with a backlighter are ok for the (very) occasional slide/negative but hopeless if you have more than about a dozen to do.

I've got a dedicated film scanner (Minolta) and it's still time consuming to do a large batch.

If it's a serious number you want scanning, a professional scanning job may be your best bet.

I'm looking at about a thousand images, all told!! Think I'll ask around re: professional transfer.

Thanks chaps.

Your best option is a dedicated film scanner. They start from 200 quids to, well, the sky is the limit...

But with that quantity, your best bet is to look for profesional help. For obvious reasons, I can't advertise the bussines I manage, but contact me and may be able to help you...
