550 fuel setting

I have just been flicking through the instruction DVD and was wondering how to set the fuel gauge. The dvd guides you through how to get to the fuel setting but on point 3 it says enter a amount? Do i fill the bike up and enter how much the tank takes or is it someting else. Do you also have to leave the Zumo on the bike all the time for the reading to be accurate. It might be a waste of time for me as i only do short journeys and this may be for longer journeys. I was just curious how it was set up and how it works. Any help would be appreciated.

thats where you enter the milege you want, if you want to be nagged by the machine every 150 miles or 200 then insert the figure, it is a bit unnessarary in my opinion.
