I have a Garmin Zumo 550, about six months old.

All was working fine until last night, I loaded some mp3 music files on to my 8GB SD card and now is wont switch on. The screen comes on, its says its loading maps but just refuses to to go any further.

I have tried the following.

1. complete reset
2. removed the battery
3. tried a different sd card

I have checked the music files are mp3 files

I'm heading to Scotland on Saturday and I really would like to have some music in my ears, any advice would be appreciated
The unit will work without the sd card installed

Cheers Brian

You say you've done a complete reset.

Did you......

Turn the unit OFF, then HOLD your thumb on the furthest bottom right hand corner of the screen, push as far into the corner as you can on the screen itself. While holding your thumb/finger on the screen press and hold the POWER ON button until you see the ZUMO splash screen, once the splash screen is up you can release the power, but continue to hold your thumb in the right corner of the screen for another 5 - 10 seconds, you should see a window that pops up and asks "Do you really want to erase all user data?", make sure to answer YES to this window, if you don't see this window, then turn unit OFF and try the above instructions again, ensuring your thumb is in the furthest portion of the bottom right hand corner of the touch screen.

After the reset is successful, please place the unit in an open sky view location, stationary, for a minimum of 20 minutes to rebuild satellite memory.

Beware this will erase all your Favorites :)

Ok...... tried that, still no joy :nenau

I can confirm that its not a problem with the SD cards because I have tried them in my other halfs 550.

Any other suggestions:nenau

If you have the zumo switched off, and then connect it to the PC through the USB lead, does it power up as it should when it's plugged into the PC?

Hi John.........

Yeah it powers-up as it usually would... Saving waypoint, routes and trip log appears on the screen as usual.

forgot to mention is my first post that I also loaded some POI's

Clutching at straws here, but could you try connecting both zumo's up and seeing if there's any differences in the files. Even trying to copy the good units files and pasting them into the bad.

AAAAaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhh

the blasted thing wont even accept my new routes for my Scotland trip or at least I cant find them on the zumo. very strange, map source confirms down load complete, but there not on the unit

Use the POI loaders to take the POI's off and see if it boots up okay.

When you load routes, it doesn't always find them straight away. Turn the unit on, put it down to resist temptaion to play, and wait :).

Eventually, it should pop up a message saying "new data found, would you like to import it" and away you go.........

Ths can take a couple of minutes, which will seem like hours while you're waiting :D

HTH

How did you load the mp3 files. Seperate folders seems to be the trick otherwise it can take an age for the mapping to load.

Whatton did a "how to" on this somewhere.

Thanks guys for all the replies..

I've tried everything........... and I'm not getting anywhere

so its going back to the retailer, hopefully I can persuade them to give be a temporary replacement unit while the dodgy one gets repaired.

Fixed it

Ok after many hours of trial and effort I managed to get the 550 up and running again .:clap:clap

It would appear that I removed an important file from the unit:eek: "silly me" so was up half the night re-loading everything. Now I understand why they say in the sales pitch "This Unit Comes with Pre-Loaded Maps"..... and silly me once again forgot to make a back-up.:tears

So I think there is a moral to this story.... "Dont mess with things you know nothing about and always make a back-up".:rob

Lesson learned.
