hi all,

i've got an 1100GS which is mainly used for commuting round the M25 every day. the problem is at 90mph the engine is doing about 5000rpm in top, which doesn't make for very relaxed cruising. I know the 1150 comes with a sixth cog, so how easy would it be to retrofit the necessary bits to my bike?

thanks in advance.

Not very - You would need a gearbox and driveshaft from an 1150, togethet with foot peg hangers et al - cheaper to buy an 1150.

thanks for your reply john, i thought that would be the case but was hoping someone would say 'its a simple bolt on!' :D

oh well :(

And having bought your 'standard' 1150, do you then fit an 1100 final drive in an attempt to get a useable 1st gear?

1st gear on the standard 1150 box is perfectly "useable". In fact, I use it every time I pull away from a stationary position.

Your right Mr Savage - fitting the final drive from the 1100GS is all the rage in the USA - looks like a sensible mod as the 1st gear on the 1150 GS is a 'pain in the bum' !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Strange..

When reading this excellent forum, I sometimes get the feeling that I ride a completely different 1150GS, than some of the other owners, the fuel consumption debate was one such time, and now is another.

First gear unusable... sorry..? is mine the only one that will pull up the side of a house fully loaded with luggage and pillion..? in Second gear, making first gear all but redundant, except when pulling away up a VERY steep incline..?

What's going on here then..?

The reason I didn't buy an 1100 was because it 'buzzed' in top when cruising at higher speeds. The six speed box is spot on as far as I can see, with 'E' being overdrive... what more could you want for road use..?

Perhaps someone will explain how first, in there view is 'unusable'

You are actually better off fitting an 850GS diff, for a closer 1st gear to the 1100/Adventure models, if you own an 1150GS that is!

Sleepy, you have a point but if you are really in the sticks and climbing the mother of all hills and you have to stop for whatever reason, then the standard 1150GS 1st gear, is too tall, making one have to slip the clutch to start upwards again. Other than that I do agree with you.

On my 1100 I roll off in 1st and change up at about 2,500 to 3,000rpm into second. Speedy acceleration is not a priority for myself. I could start in 2nd., but the bike really doesn't like it as much as first.

I'd go along with the first gear being fine kinda thing.

In fact I have trouble not lifting the front sometimes.

You should try the first gear on a K1200LT if you think the GS is too high...sheesh!
