Is there a difference between the two and if so, what.

My 07 1200GS is neaerly a year old so I've booked it in for a service and was asked whether i wanted an annual or 6000 although it's only done 4.5K miles.

I dunno?!

And I've read the manual!

Just ask them to do the relevant bits of each service as some things are duplicated-you don't want the oil changed twice do you ? ;)

It is a bit confusing, and I guess its there to catch both hi milers and sunday bikers. If your bike is nearly a year old but done only 4.5k miles aske them to combine. But becarful they don't charge for both as has happened according to this site.

Some things on a bike wear over time as well as by usage, therefore the diiferentiation by time and mileage, but frankly with modern oils, fluids and seals etc. It really is nit picking, but you have to remember that BMW rights its specs not based on bike nead but based on language that overcome American litigation crap.

In general I'd say do a good service (change oil, filters, check other fluids, brake pads, valves etc.) yearly or every 10k miles which ever comes first. Its worked for my bikes over 32 years of riding.

To save you money ask for a combined 6000/annual service cost me around £220 last march, you then will be OK for another 12 months :beerjug: its very confusing but in the long run its just another way of BMW & its dealers to rip us all off :spitfire:spitfire:spitfire

I had this confusion having recently bought my GS. It was registered sept '06 but had only done 2000 miles. It had had it's 600 mile service but nothing since. The owner didn't do the sept '07 annual as it wasn't being used.

First thing I did was go straight to my nearest dealer to ask advice and _they_ even told me it was confusing. I'm not sure quite what they are are going to do (booked in for the 15th) but I got the impression it would be a mixture of annual and 6000 mile as we're off to the Alps on the 17th so the mileage will be close to that when we get back. I think that makes sense:confused:

I'm a bit concerned that should anything crop up between now and September when the warranty runs out that BMW might refuse to fix it as it technically missed it's annual service last year. I'm hoping that given the very low mileage and the fact that the first thing I did on buying it was booking it in for a service would swing it my way.

They will change the brake fluid at an annual service (and charge you more) but not at the 6k service :nenau

:D

If the bike is only 1 year old it shouldn't need a brake fluid change. The first one on all GS's with the stainless brake lines is at 2 years old.

No if its a 07 bike it will need a brake fluid change on first years service :spitfire service schedule have been changed for 07 model trust me

Look out

You only need worry if you call in your Guarantee - first thing BMW will look at on their computer - has it been serivced?
Otherwise just giove it a good seeing too once a year but keep your eye on the oil level as it can / will need topped up occassionaly
Main dealers are there to make money from servicing - they charge you for 5 hours work @ £40 - £60 per hour but crack in a service every 2 hours - that's how the techi's make money.

What sort of service should i ask for?,...i've only done 830 miles in the last year:eek:

Get off that fecking island for starters !!
I'm scared of those big roads!,..although i must get the 2nd mot done over in england at a bmw dealer, the first mot done here at a non bm dealer was a bit worrying, they said my front suspension was siezed because they couldn't push the forks down with the front brake on!

Not Dave Deaths by any chance ?

I just had a 6k sevice. My understanding is that the BMW approach now takes account of the mileage, the time interval since the last service and the likely 'expiry' of components before the next service (eg fluids), and also includes appropriate aspects of what was the annual inspection.

Anyhow, I had the brake fluid changed, front and rear. Usefully the invoice also indicated brake pad and tyre wear.

Lotus do a similar thing with the Elise, no doubt, as like bikes, half are used regularly and half are sunny day toys. The Coolant, clutch and brake fluid are separate from the 9k miles regular service and are changed after time not distance. Without stating the obvious I guess it's because some things degrade over time (cambelts, etc) and others don't to the same degree (sparkplugs etc). You could argue they are saving you money by not requiring brake/clutch fluid changes every five minutes if you are a high-miler.
