Today I was chatting to another GS owner in the garage whilst waiting for the bike to have its first 6000 mile service. Just mentioned that I had very little issues with the GS over the past year and we were in a mutal arn`t our bikes great virtual backslapping situation, when the service manager came over and asked to have a word with me in a voice that a doctor would use just before he told you that you had cancer.
I went over to the counter and noticed that there was a very long stud on the desk and I thought I cant remember ever seeing one on of those on my bike.
He then held it up to me and said " I`m sorry you will need a new engine ", I immediatly thought now stop taking the p*ss and tell what that stud is. " you see this is a stud that holds the cylinders on and the thread has gone on one end and we have to replace the engine. I asked him wouldnt it be simpler to replace the stud and he explained that they have come across a small number of 1200`s that have stripped the threads in the crankcase and bmw say replace with a short engine.
Well not a minor issue is it, makes the clutch switch failure I had a few months ago seem rather minor compared to this. If not found at this time it was expalined that it would have resulted in an engine failure in the future. I would like to think of it as an entire cylinder flying off and hurlting into the distance but it would have proberly been a total oil loss at speed, over the back tyre and hurtling into the distance. Oh I made them up, it most likely would have just stopped.
Still new engine in stock and being delivered tommorrow so should be fixed fairly quickly, only downsides is having to run it in again and having an R1200R for a loan bike. Nice engine but no wind protection and I have to take painkillers to ride it.
Do you think that they will try and charge me for the service ???
