should i use xp 64 bit on the athlon 64 x 2 pc i'm thinking of building?

is it compatible with normal windows progs, nero etc.?

doesn't seem to be used much by commercial system builders, is it something to avoid?

According to the reviews and forum comments on it, iy only has a benefit running 64 bit progs (office and some of the other big titles have been released in 4 bit versions) but it can be slower running the older stuff......though I'd guess the increased processor speed might hide that. :nenau

How's about getting XP64 bit version and running it on a dual boot partition for a while then running benchmarks??

Nothing to lose apart from a bit of time and a download then ;)

it's not for me, so i won't have time for all that malarkey. want to get it right first time as i intend using legit windows from now on

er, mostly ;)

i have been running XP64 at home for a while now - in a nutshell give it a skip
it really does not offer any great benefits over XP32

wait 6 months till after vista is released and get the 64 bit version of that instead

if you do take the plunge

make a note of all your hardware bits and pieces and check that drivers are available and or compatible - do the same for your software - you will find sites/forums like this inavaluable

nero 7 i believe is compatible, 6 and below are not

Not all 'bits' have 64-bit drivers available, really needs 64-bit applications to be useful, only speed increase I noticed was Internet Explorer, which isn't that much use to me, as I like Firefox
But next IE has tabbed browsing too!

What is benefit of tabbed browsing compared to opening several IE sessions and using the toolbar to select whichever one you want? Hopefully not a dumb question...

been using tabbed browsing in opera for a couple of years now. would not go back to doing it as you suggest, but i'm finding it very hard to explain why

And the other thing is that it will not run mapsource, e-mail from Garmin:
Thank you for contacting Garmin Europe.

Unfortunately, the current set of drivers will need to be rewritten for 64
bit processing. This is true across the industry in general. We have
contacted our team in Tempe and they will write them at some point in the
future.

It is awesome at video editing though, rips the pixels out of the camcorder so fast and the DVD writing is awesome
