Hi,

SWMBO's 650gs has started stalling at junctions at low revs. She says it did it about eight times on the way home today.

It's a 2001 gs model with the normal tickover (not the exaggerated tickover of some of the early 650s ie my 2000 Dakar) and has about 18000mls on it.

Anyone come across this before? Fuel filter maybe? 'are they expensive' Or is this a known issue?:nenau

When I had a Dakar (2004 model) it did this.

I had started it with the throttle slightly open.

Apparently if you do, the bike thinks this is the closed (tick-over) position and so when you do close the throttle completely it stalls. Simply restarting again does not cure it.

Can't remember the procedure to reset it though, probably leaving the bike switched off for a while will do it.

Or could be what I remember is complete b*!!*cks so ignore me !!!

air inlet manifold rubber. common problem.

:agree

If it occurs more frequently, then look at the rubbers.

Arr! I'll have a look at those then 'I'm assuming you mean between the throttle body and the head?'.

I did a service on it last night 'oil filter, air filter and plug' had the air bix off too should of had a closer look then.

Cheers for your thoughts guys :thumb2

Cheers Nick, I know about this one.

'Turn ignition on, Twist throttle stop to stop and back slowly three times, Turn ignition off. Start the bike with no throttle.'

When my manifold split the first symptom was a refusal to idle and then it got rapidly worse over the next 30 miles or so to the point that it would only run with the throttle wide open.

yep mine started this one morning,

Called BMW who said " turn it off with key and turn it back on again".

Just like using windows (TM) Operating system

SWMBO called BW today.

The man said it could be that the fuel filter breather is blocked :)mmmm didn't know fuel filters have breathers :nenau) 'ride with filler cap unlocked to allow air into tank' This seemed to make a difference :thumb2

Ordered new fuel filter 'he also said it should be replaced about now (mileage wise) anyway. Also ordered the manifold rubber mentioned above.

Guess who's taking the 650 apart again at the weekend  So many fekin screws :nenau

val, i didnt think it had that many miles on it.
you should have asked me before you bought new,if you needed some used bits:rolleyes:

Hi Jase,

As it happens we now have three 650's  (Yeah I know)

Jills; 2001 (bumble) with 18000mls

My; 2000 Dakar 26000mls

And; a 2004 twin spark (very easy access to the second plug on these newer bikes, good for puddle jumping) 38000mls in need of a full service plus chain and sprockets.

I might give you a shout in a bit to see what you have left in your collection. :thumb

Val.

PS: 1200 39000mls. Still in the camp and staying in it. :D

Having exactly the same problem with my SWMBO 650 gs too. Also the bike seemed to be getting really hot but not sure if that was the Spanish sunshine!!!!
The bike is currently being fixed... I've always said those guys at RD5 are fine chaps! I will share what the problem was and the answer as soon as I know :)

Thanks Yogi, I'd be interested to know what they find.

So far We've changed the oil, filters, plug and last night the fuel filter. all with no success:( We're still waiting for the Throttle body manifold rubber to arrive from Germany, so thats the next thing. If it's not cured then, I'll have to give it to the dealer to sort out. :nenau

did you try disconnecting the battery to reset the brain as suggested here

try disconnecting the BMS-C connector first or the fuse, both are easier to get to than the battery.

leaving it disconnected for 15 minutes should reset the computer :D

Tried this this evening, then went for a ride round.

:) Seems to have done the trick :thumb2:clap:clap:clap

SWMBO will take it out tomorrow to test it again. All being well Job done.

Thanks for the suggestions everyone :thumb2

Hope it has sorted it :thumb2

f650.com is a really useful place for info on these bikes :D

Nuts :spitfire Didn't work.

clearing the memory must have fooled it into thinking nothing was wrong. SWMBO rode it this morning and said it's still the same  Good job I took the Dakar along, so I had a go and it was back to how it was before :(

Still waiting for the manifold rubber thingy. Failing that it'll have to go to the dealers :nenau

On the plus side she did her first oil/air/plug service on her 04 650 almost entirely by herself :bow

Well I just took the throttle body manifold rubber off. It's in excellent condition :( So what the fek is wrong with the thing :nenau

I've tried a service. Oil, plug and filters. No change.

Put on a new Fuel filter. No change.

Reset the computer. Temporarily cured the problem, then symptoms returned. So no change there either.

Now I've had the manifold off, cleaned it up and it's in really good condition. no cracking or any evidence of breaking down.

The symptoms;

Whilst riding the bike in the early part of a journey ie within the first two miles, the bike will falter as if it's running out of petrol. If you stop it will simply stall. When it warms up it seems to get better.

I'm starting to wonder if it could be delivering the wrong (cold running) fuel mixture for too long after start up.
I have tried resetting the throttle BTW.

Looks like it'll have to got for a visit to the dealers.

Any further ideas welcome.

Val.
